For a while now printer companies have encouraged you to use only their ink and buy it direct from them. This latest offering goes one step further by offering free cartridges sent through the post for the first nine months. However to qualify you must claim it on your initial setup. The unit does not come with a CD/DVD so you have to have an Internet Connection during the setup; the software comes from the Microsoft Store and not HP.

click image to enlargeThis is a three in one unit meaning not only does it print but it also scans and copies. The unit is 46x32x25cm.
The only external connections are the power lead and a USB upstream port. Once the install software is installed it looks for the unit and it cannot be found. On screen help covers this and that is when you need to use the dummy Wi-Fi connection it has installed, once located it then automatically switches back to your normal Wi-Fi offering. It then guides you through the install of the supplied ink cartridges and the rest of the setup ending in a printer test page.
The total time from opening the box till the test page was just under an hour.
The claimed printing speeds are 15PPM black and 10PPM colour.
It comes with a standard Black and a standard Colour cartridge. There are ‘XL’ sizes available but the cartridges supplied by post from HP are much larger than even the ‘XL’. After only a couple of days use I am told replacement cartridges are on the way, the note said do not install until ‘ink very low’ level is reached. The claim made on the HP website is that instant Ink can save 70% on ink costs.
Apart from printing from your own Wi-Fi network you can print remotely. I see from the HP website that Apple users are supported but as I do not have any Apple devices I cannot confirm this, it also states Chrome OS is supported. I did manage to print from a Chromebook using the upstream USB port and direct print via USB lead.
In my tests I found scanning and copying worked when initiated from the device. Apart from the A4 flatbed on top of this is an ADF (automatic document feeder) that is stated to support up to 35 pages.
Scanning using the flatbed – required when printing pages from a book – I got around five pages in a minute as you have to do this one at a time.
This will probably be a ‘Home’ unit as the small print seems to say up to 700 PPM during the nine month free ink availability.
The front left has the 6x4cm easy to read touchscreen that controls everything including scanning and copying.
I will update you if I have any problems during the nine months but so far so good, with no printer jams and as regular readers will know I use a mix of weights and types of paper.
