Already well known for its range of desktop and notebook computers plus LCD displays and a PDA offering, Acer has recently announced its entry into two other fields. Digital still cameras and flat screen LCD TV products are the new ranges that Acer hopes will make it a one-shop solution for todays customer. These new products, Acer believes, will complete the digital chain as the strands of IT and CE come together.
The new digital camera range will initially consist of three models covering the three main areas of value, mainstream and fashion conscious markets. Each range of cameras will have it own specific selling points although some similarities will exist across all the different cameras. Adopting a policy of not attempting to re-invent the wheel, Acer is sticking with accepted standards.
Each camera will be housed in an aluminium casing and comes with a 64MB SD card, carrying pouch or bag, ArcSoft/NTI photo software and all the necessary cables. All the cameras feature an optical viewfinder to capture the perfect shot even in the brightest sunlight conditions; a built-in flash with various shooting modes to help alleviate problems with red eye; voice recording facilities; and a design concept that should appeal to a wide range of users.
Aimed at the value sector of the market is the 5 mega pixel Acer CR-5130 priced at £149. This model comes with a 1.8" CCD sensor and a 3x optical / 4x digital zoom lens. It has a 1.5" LCD TFT display. The camera has a maximum picture resolution of 2560 x 1920. Powered by a rechargeable lithium battery, this camera has a 10cm Macro mode and can store up to 140 photographs. Acer regards it as one of the most powerful digital still cameras at its price point.
Next in the range is the ultra-slim 5 mega pixel Acer CS-5530. Aimed at both the first and second time buyer looking for a small stylish camera, this particular model measures 89 x 55 x 24mm (W x H x D) and weighs just 180g. It takes 2.5 seconds from switch on to be ready for the first picture and has a response time of less than one second. This camera has a 2.5" LCD TFT screen and a 6cm Macro mode. Maximum picture resolution is the same as the CR-5130 although its rechargeable lithium battery only has enough juice for 100 photographs. The CS-5530 has been priced at £199.
Completing this initial offering of cameras is the CR-6539. This is a 6 mega pixel camera measuring 94 x 63 x 35mm and weighing 210g. Its 2.5" CCD sensor is capable of supporting a resolution of up to 2816 x 2122 with shutter speeds ranging from ½second to one thousandth of a second. The camera has 3 scene modes (Auto, Night, and Manual), 5 white balance modes and 4 flash modes. Providing image feedback is a 2.5" LCD TFT screen while the rechargeable lithium battery can handle 140 photographs. The CR-6539 has been priced at £229.
If digital cameras are not on your current shopping list then maybe Acers new flat screen LCD televisions will be of interest. There is a choice of 26" or 32" models. Both models make use of 3D Motion-adaptive de-interlacing technology plus a 2D/3D Comb Filter for enhanced picture quality. In addition the two units feature non-linear image scaling and shaping so as to provide better switching between the various normal, wide, panorama and letter viewing modes.
A combination of 170° viewing angle and 15° swivel in either direction should ensure comfortable viewing for all the family while the built-in 5 watt speakers will enrich the mono and stereo audio experience. The Acer LCD TVs are fully compatible with the PAL and SECAM Telextext system for accessing news headlines and other information. A remote control, capable of storing up to five favourite channels for one-click access, is part of the standard package as are features such as Picture in Picture, Picture by Picture and Picture on Picture.
The 26"Acer AL26710 model is priced at £899. As yet I have no pricing information for the 32" Acer AL32710 although I have been informed that this model will feature a high-speed 6-in-1 memory card reader so that digital camera owners can view their high resolution images on this wide screen display.
