After a brief sabbatical following the mischievous deeds of Loki, Helga, the Viking Warrior, takes to the battleground once again in e-Funsoft's latest Match 3 offering. Entitled "Dawn of Doom", this episode 5 of the Helga saga has our heroine entering the shadowed lands of Svartalheim. Along with her companions, she will need to investigate the changes in the resident Dwarfs' behaviour as a dark force threatens all the realms of Valhava.
Spread over five chapters, the game can be played in either Timed or Relaxed mode as you face a series of Match 3 grids filled with an assortment of tiles and blocked areas. The layout of the Match 3 elements follows e-Funsoft usual pattern. The centrally positioned grid will be sandwiched between power-ups on the left and the level's designated challenge on the right.
Generally the ability to clear out the required type and number of specific tiles will be completed by the usual method of swapping two adjacent tiles in order to create groups of three or more similar tiles. The group then disappears with the resulting space being filled by other tiles falling downwards. In some cases this process can result in a cascading effect which can work towards achieving the set challenge.
While most tiles can be removed as part of a group or explosion, there is one type of tile, referred to as an Artefact or Crystal, will need to be removed by a different method. You will need to create a pathway beneath it so that it descends to the base of the grid and can be removed. If featured on the grid, this tile will form part of the challenge.
You also have the option to make use of the small selection of supplied power-ups with the level. Depending upon the type of power-up, this facility could remove a certain amount of tiles but, once used, a power-up becomes unavailable for that level. However you do have the ability to create other power-ups in the form of bombs that can destroy tiles. A bomb can be created whenever you create a group with five or more similar tiles. These bombs can be manipulated into the best position.
The completion of each grid level will bring a reward of some stars. These stars can be used to finance the activation of four upgrades that are attached to each chapter. These upgrades must be purchased in the correct order to make progress.
Following an upgrade, which features alterations to the background scenery, you will be presented with a static cut-scene. This will involving a couple of the main characters who deliver dialogue in spoken and printed text format. The delivered text will move the story line along a little as you move through the five realms of Norse Mythology.
Apart from the static cut-scenes, which do tend to be rather boring, the game's graphics are well-drawn with some challenging levels. This title can be downloaded from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99. It is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £7.91. The game requires a 1.5 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 192MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
