Hands come in all sizes. Some are small; others of a medium size; while a good proportion qualify for the large category. While this observation might seem relatively unimportant for many tasks, it can have an affect with regards to long term use of a computer mouse. Fortunately computer mice are available in a range of sizes.
In order to maximise the comfort zone and reduce possible stress and strain, you should make the effort to locate a mouse suitable for your hand size. Those that consider their hands to be on the small size might like to consider the MiniScroller Optical Mouse from Belkin.
Described as being perfect for small hands, travellers and children, this USB mouse is of the two-button, wheeled variety encased in blue and silver livery. The mouse measures 95 x 60mm with a smooth, curved top that feels comfortable in the hand. Connectivity is via a 170cm USB lead. An adapter is provided for those who wish to use a PS/2 connection.
As its title indicates, this mouse uses optical technology to provide greater accuracy and do away with problems that can arise when dirt particles clog up the inside of the mouse. Optical technology also brings the advantage of working on various surface types. However you should avoid surfaces that are reflective such as those that are glossy or have a mirror-like capability.
Drivers are provided for users working on pre-Windows XP platforms. There should be no problems with Windows XP which already has the required driver software. However if you want to take advantage of the extra features available from the mouses scroll wheel then you will need to install the provided software no matter what version of Windows you are using. With the provided software you can adjust settings that include the ability to assign a specific task, selected from a list, to a click of the scroll wheel.
Those wishing to use the mouse with extra features on a new laptop computer might encounter a problem loading the software. Belkin has supplied the software on a 3½ floppy disk. Unfortunately it is becoming increasingly common for laptop and notebook computers to be supplied without a 3½ drive. One solution would be to copy the contents of the floppy disk on to a CD or USB device that could be accessed from the laptop.
The Belkin MiniScroller Optical Mouse is a reasonable product but does not really stand out from the pack. It will not look out of place with most systems and carries out its designated tasks without any fuss or problems. Expect to pay around £17 for this mouse.
