This started as a means to use all the features of Nero Platinum Suite which I reviewed using the Acer Aspire 1 that like most recent offering has no optical drive.
I searched online expecting to pay close to £20 which was figure I had paid a few years ago my search engine found one at £8.89 including delivery it looked to me the same as units costing nearly double, I was able to pay with PayPal in case it was some sort of scam. I ordered on Monday it said I would receive it Friday-Saturday it actually arrived two days earlier on Wednesday. Delivery was by MyHermes.
It is 13.5x13.5x1.8cm there is no branding name on the unit or the box. It comes with two leads a 50cm lead that fits into the rear of the unit and goes to USB. The other lead is 3.5mm to USB and is also 50cm long.
The reason you need two leads is that USB does not always draw enough current from a single lead to power the drive.
The front of the drive has a small flush push button and beside it an LED.
I used it with the Acer Aspire 1 playing CD’s and making CD’s via Nero and both worked correctly.
I then connected it to my Notebook and played CD’s as stated in my Nero article it refused to install Nero on it so that remains a problem with Nero.
I checked and this offer still remains what I cannot understand is how they can sell for so little and also give you courier delivery for no extra cost.
This unit works correctly does not have any damage so is a true bargain.
So if you ever have the requirement to play CD’s or DVD’s on your PC or Notebook this is a very cheap solution. Also it could allow reinstallation of items that came on CD or DVD and even allow access to those photos you burnt to a CD when all PCs and Notebooks came with an optical drive.
I had not previously heard of OnBuy.Com but as you pay with PayPal your money should be safe, available for £8.89 including delivery, you even get a 180 day guarantee from PayPal.
