A Family Detective

To borrow a phrase from elsewhere, “Who do you call when the need to solve a crime that involves murder, robbery and hidden secrets?”

Instead of the Ghostbusters switching their field of expertise and focus, the answer to the question concerns a relative of the now retired Sherlock Holmes who steps onto centre stage and fronts AWIGOR’s Detective Agency Mosaics title.  In this game you adopt the role of Sharon Holmes, the daughter of the legendary Victorian detective, who is keen to show off her talents when called upon to unravel a series of crimes that form the basis of this next title.

The game’s action is based around 120 levels of Japanese Colour Crosswords or Nonogram game play.  Each of these levels involve completing up to six layers of colourful grids by using numeric clues running across the top and down the left side of the grid in order to select which cells need to be filled in on each layer.  Positioned alongside the grid layers will be a panel showing the colours used by the different layer, available mistakes and four rechargeable power-ups to help select appropriate cells.

Unlike other examples of this form of game play, which I have encountered, some of the grid levels will feature a random mini game.  The presence of the mini game will be indicated by a red question mark among the numeric clues.  The mini game will require you to fill a set space with some coloured irregular shaped building blocks.  Solving the mini game and completing the current Nonogram level will bring a financial reward.

Following a completed Nonogram level, you will be presented with a background scene showing the current area.  This scene will be overlaid with a link to the next few levels but these must be carried out in order.  There will also be appropriate links to available contacts including shop assistance and a constable.  These characters can be called upon to deliver information delivered in text format to Sharon Holmes.  Additional links are available to check on evidence found and visit the Detective Office which has more of a look of a study.

A visit to the Office will give you the opportunity to spend the rewards earned from solving the mini game puzzles and Nonogram levels.  The amount available will be displayed in the top left corner of the screen.  This balance can be used to purchase various items to decorate the study.  The range of items includes a telephone, pair of gloves, pen & ink, sailing ship, revolver, Sherlock Holmes book, clock and camera.  You can also increase the strength of any power-ups available from the panel alongside the Nonogram grids.

The Sherlock Holmes aspect certainly adds an extra layer of interest and appeal to the main Nonogram game play.  I downloaded my copy of this title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99.  It can also be downloaded from Big Fish Games priced at £8.21.  The game requires a 1.6 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 81.8MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
