The Acer Aspire 6935G measures 38x27x4cm and weights 3.2Kg. It measures 28cm from front to back with the lid open this may sound strange but the hinge opens behind the rear of the unit.
The left hinge is where the power plug goes in – novel – in front of this is the modem port (anyone still use dial up?) VGA port, Ethernet port, E-SATA and HDMI along with three audio ports complete the left side. Under the front edge is a card port. The right side has the DVD multi drive (including Blu-ray) three USB ports and the right hinge has the Kensington Lock connector. There is of course nothing on the back as the screen surround descends by around 2cm over it.
The viewable screen is 35x20cm giving the notional 16inch measurement. The keyboard has 89 keys with almost all full size. This is set very much towards the right side with only a 1.5cm border before the edge there are a column of four marked buttons. The 6cm left border has various touch controls looking rather futuristic. The 6cm area behind the keyboard has the on button on the left with an array of speakers under a grill area for the rest of the width. This leaves the area in front of the keyboard that varies between 6cm and 6.5cm in the centre of this area the 9x7cm touchpad is situated just left of centre.
The 16inch display gives 1920x1080 full HD with this displaying 14% more than a 15.4inch display would. You get Vista Home Premium and a range of Acer software. There is a web cam in the top of the display.
Sometimes items arrive with everything installed; this was not one of those. Windows was sort of and after answering a few questions it finishes the install. At this point I tried playing a Blu-ray and nothing. Okay so install the Blu-ray /DVD software from the supplied media, still nothing. Next find another disc with a whole range of utilities and drivers and let this work away (around 30 minutes) but it does install everything from a single interface. Still nothing, well the Blu-ray software starts but wants an update, update done and you have guessed it nothing. Anyhow I then contact technical support and after a second update finally I can play some Blu-ray movies, worth the wait – yes – as the Dolby surround sound is excellent.
Battery life is said to be up to 3hours and 20 minutes, not with the battery I got. If I am generous I got around 1% per minute but this was playing movies, light use was a little more. Fast recharge to 80% in one hour and full recharge in three hours (on) and 2 hours (off).
The Windows Experience rating gives it 5.2 (always rated to the lowest component) the figures are 5.2 for Processor, 5.9 for RAM, 5.9 for Graphics, 5.5 for Gaming Graphics and 5.4 for Hard Disc.
The processor is a 2.27GHz Intel dual core offering it has 4GB of RAM and a 283GB hard disc spread over ‘C’ and ‘D’.
Shutdown time from the desktop is a very acceptable 15 seconds while boot up to Gadgets being open on the Desktop is 75seconds.
My one real dislike apart from not being able to play some Blu-ray discs was the reflective screen if means often you need to fiddle with your seating position to get the light coming from the right point. I know that most lower end units have reflective screens but this is never going to be a cheap unit with the power needed for a Blu-ray drive.
