Continuing with its stories from the mythical environment known as the Crossroad of Worlds, Domini Games has brought to out attention the tale of the Star Riddle set in this puzzling environment. This review is based on the Collector's Edition version of Crossroad of Worlds - Star Riddle which places you in the role of a Mystery Agency detective assigned with the task of capturing an elusive star thief.
Domini Games has made a minor change to its usual set-up routine and more major changes to its Collector's Edition bonus additions that come with this title. Game difficulty levels have been reduced to three choices as the Custom level featured previously is now omitted. More serious surgery has been carried out on the Collector's Edition extras as there is no option to replay Hidden Object scenes, mini game puzzles or cut-scene videos.
The game is played out over 72 different levels that stretch out over a winding path laid out over several screens of rolling scenery. You need to follow this path and visit each location where you will be presented with a task that will lead you on a journey to discover that King Jobar stole the stars belonging to other worlds and has specific nefarious plans for their use. As part of your investigation, you can work with the Keeper of Stars and the witch Eolin.
Until you arrive at the next level, you never know what type of challenge you will be expected to face. It could involve some form of Hidden Object action, a mini game puzzle or a request to produce some type of potion or similar task. In some cases the task will be presented without any instructions thus requiring some experimenting by the player to ascertain what is required.
When Hidden Object game play, which makes a regular appearance, a variety of formats is used. You might find that you could be faced by numerous scenes that all need to be worked through and tackled to complete the specific challenge. Required items could be shown as text, images or silhouettes. As well as finding the necessary items, you might need to replace them in a scene or use them in a particular way. With some scenes, you might need to change a light filter so that required items become visible while some items can only be collected in a specific order.
Mini game puzzles also make regular appearances during your investigation. Allowing you a choice of either an Easy or Hard version, with some assistance being available by using the supplied Strategy Guide, the puzzles are varied in type. You could be asked to Spot the Difference between two scenes of content. Other puzzles involve locating all the lions or dragons in a scene, arranging balls by their weight, replacing pieces of a map, identifying mythical creatures and searching for pairs spread over different scenes.
In order to complete your investigation, aided by your assistant Caitlin plus the Keeper of the Stars and the witch Eolin, you will need to create potions. This type of task will involve following visual instructions listing tasks to be completed in a specific order. In this way you can produce a truth serum, restore a witch's power, make an apple pie (just in case you are hungry), and make a restorative cup of tea. As you should appreciate, there is no rest for whoever solves the Star Riddle.
I downloaded my copy of this game, which includes a bonus mission involving Caitlin finding a long lost friend, from Gamehouse.com, where it is priced at $19.99. It is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £15.68. The game requires a 2.0 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 559MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
