The Brothers Grimm gathered together a vast collection of stories and characters from the realms of folk legends and magical lands. The people of 8 Floor Games have dipped into this enormous treasure source of material as the basis for the company's latest offering of Mystery Solitaire Grimm Tales 9. Centred around the Tripeaks Solitaire game play, this title takes you into the worlds inspired by the work of the Brothers Grimm with the player being challenged to complete 200 Solitaire levels of clearing various card layout arrangements.
A number of adjustable options are available when playing this game. Profiles can be created to record the progress of different players with set volume levels for background music and sound effects accompanying card movements. The action can be viewed in full screen mode with cards being selected for use by a special cursor. This game offers the player a choice of three designs for card faces and a larger choice of nine patterned backs to suit different players.
The game can be played either as a Newbie or Professional with the action spread over 20 different locations that each contain ten hands of Solitaire to complete. When playing the game as a Newbie you will be given the opportunity to replay any single hand to improve your performance. However as a Professional player any replaying of levels must feature all the content of the current location.
The layout of the various Solitaire cards is set out against a backdrop of a scene from the Brother Grimm's library of stories. The presented layout of cards will need to be cleared by removing cards in a chain format with each subsequent card being either one higher or lower than its linking card. Many of the cards in a layout will be laid face down and possible covered by other cards. You can neither see the value of face down or gain access to covered cards until any blocking cards have been removed.
When you need to start a fresh chain of cards, this action can be instigated by selecting the top card from a reserve stack that is supplied for this purpose. You will also have the chance to select from a number of options to aid progress. These options include a shuffle option of remaining cards, the use of a wild or Joker card and the opportunity to replay your last move. These features will need to have been earned from success earlier in the game.
Along with clearing cards from the presented layout, you will need to be aware of the presence of some special cards. Some cards will be coloured gold and these cards will definitely need to be cleared in order to complete the particular level. Other cards might feature a red dot and by removing these cards you will receive a reward of coins which can be used to purchase the power-ups, such as Joker and Shuffle, mentioned earlier for use when required.
While the game presents some well-drawn scenes from the storybook aspect of the Brother Grimm's collection, this title will mainly appeal to fans of Solitaire game play. I downloaded my copy of this title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99. You can also download this game from Big Fish Games priced at £7.77. The game requires a 1.0 GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and 33.6MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
