The success of a product can sometimes be judged by the state of the add-on industry that it creates. An obvious example of this is the third-party products that have been developed to add functionality to the ubiquitous iPod device in all its incarnations. Numerous companies have taken advantage of this Apple phenomena to rack up sales for the various peripheral devices designed to enhance the user’s experience whether in-car, in-home or where ever they might be located. One such product is the iTeufel Clock which is available direct from the German manufacturer.
The iTeufel Clock combines the features of an alarm clock radio with iPod playing and charging capabilities. Available in a choice of black or white with a matt silver mesh running around the front and sides of the box, the main clock radio unit measures 1800 x 700 x 1770mm (W x H x D). Centrally positioned on the front of the unit is a 58 x 18mm LCD panel providing the time and feedback when setting up features and current status of the clock radio. There are four levels of brightness, ranging from bright to off, available for the LCD panel.
A control panel, split by the iPod docking station, runs across the top of the unit. Positioned along the back of the clock radio are connections for mains power, USB, aerial antenna and auxiliary input plus a slider bar for switching between clock, alarm and lock settings.
Power is provided by a two-piece lead with a brick size adapter in the middle. Also included in the box are a remote control unit with battery; USB cable; VHF auxiliary aerial cable; stereo 3.5mm mini-jack lead; and six iPod adapter inserts for the various popular models of the Apple device.
This clock radio has two separate alarms. These alarms can be set to specific times with a choice of buzzer, radio or iPod as the audio source. When activated, the alarm rises in volume level that is user-definable in the case of the radio or iPod source. A snooze bar, conveniently positioned on the front top of the clock radio, when pressed will turn the alarm for a period of eight minutes before it is reactivated. As far as I was able to ascertain this period could not be adjusted.
Not surprisingly, knowing Teufel’s expertise in the field of audio speakers, the quality achieved by this clock radio should not disappoint. Built into this clock radio is a 2-inch subwoofer that helps provide a rounded audio experience with 8 watts output. Up to ten presets can be set for favourite radio stations. When connected, the iPod device will be recharged. A sleep function can give up to 90 minutes of audio before the unit switches itself off.
The supplied infrared control unit allows you to control most of the operations of this clock radio. You can turn it on/off; switch between input sources; adjust the volume level; tune the radio and select from various presets; set the brightness level of the LCD; and control the iPod. In fact the remote can do everything apart from setting the time and alarm times.
For those not familiar with Teufel, this German company only sells direct to the consumer. You can order goods from the company’s website. As part of its standard terms of business, Teufel allows the user a period of up to eight weeks in which they can return goods with no questions asked. Teufel provides a 12-year warranty for its products. The iTeufel Clock is priced at £89 which includes any delivery charges.
