Kids, Reading, Spelling and Maths

Image of author
Three different packages all from Encyclopedia Britannica and all republished by Focus. All of these are aimed at the 3-6 age group.

Excelling At Spelling

It’s strange I never remember being encouraged to learn to spell in the early years at school and with the aid of this package I doubt that the child will either. There are a total of five different interactive games, this is a package that would a few years ago have had the title of an Edutainment product.

It needs 30MB of hard disc space but will run on a Windows 98 or later PC. Apart from the obvious factor that it encourages the child to learn to spell common words, we are told that hand to eye co-ordination, logical reasoning, IT Skills, Memory Recognition, Problem Solving, Listening Skills, Word and Sound Association and Reading Skills will all be improved.

There are 3,500 words ranging in difficulty to suit the age range and ability of the child. It even includes the governments key stage 3 wordlist and it is possible - with a microphone - to customise this.

Excelling At Reading

This is a logical package to go with the ‘Spelling’ package above. It’s chicken and egg does reading come first and spelling second? This product comes on two CD’s but still costs the same price. The list of what this does is rather different to the ‘Spelling’ above. Phonetic Awareness, Letter-Sound Recognition, Picture-Word Association, Word Recognition, Vocabulary, Matching Skills, Letter Formation, Contextual Understanding, Stories and Poems, Visual Discrimination and Writing Skills.

The two CD’s support Key Stage 1 and contain over 120 hours of activities and step by step lessons. There are 34 storyboards to practice reading aloud – this can be recorded - and video clips to help the child’s grasp of phonics. Same system specifications as above but it needs only 10MB of hard disc space.

Excelling At Maths

This is set in a magical forest and is stated to help children from 3 to 6 to develop numeracy skills. It supports key stage 1 and teaches the child to count, compare, group add and subtract (up to 10). As the child progresses the tasks become more taxing and a record is kept so it can be tailored to the individual. Same Specifications as the other two but needs 70MB or hard disc space.

The Parent Guide suggests this will help with learning, Counting, Addition, Subtraction, Grouping, Comparing, Identifying numbers as greater or lesser than, Visual Perception, Shape Recognition, Problem Solving and Pattern Creation.

All three packages are available from dealers or from the Focus website (link below) currently Focus have a special offer where you can buy any three £9.99 packages for £25. If you have a young child the three items above for £25 would be a good investment.
