The Epson Stylus SX200 is 44x34x17cm when no paper is inserted and the output tray is collapsed. Insert A4 in the rear and the last figure increases by 15cm and fully extend the paper output tray and the depth increases by 18cm.

This is a four ink four cartridge offering and although lots of units print somewhat faster the quality is excellent.

I found the installation quite slow and in total it took 25 minutes, this was on a fast Vista machine the stated 450MB of hard disc space was well exceeded as it decided that various extra items were needed (it was a nearly new system) and the total hard disc space taken was 3.3GB.

There is a whole raft of software much of which can be accessed from more than one place, this does on occasions leave the novice wondering what is the best way to get to where. Once the learning curve is accepted the outcome is good.

Printing the nonsensical 200 word document in the quickest print mode with quality-speed slider fully to the speed side gives a rather grey output at 20PPM, printing a more normal 1500 word document over four pages gives the same grey output at 14PPM. However whenever you print in 'normal' mode you get a slightly slower speed but a nice clear crisp black output.

Scanning works well and somewhat surprisingly - to me anyway - there are lots of choices including 'Auto' that works well or 'Home' or 'Business' all with their own options and choices. That's that learning curve again. Scan an A4 image to a jpg file on the PC takes around 25 seconds.

Looking round the unit the USB lead fits into a recess into the back as does the A/C lead. On the front edge to the left of the paper output are inputs for a Pict Bridge lead. Above this two card slots that support Compact Flash, xD, SD and MS Pro. This unit has no TFT so images must be read on the PC.

The controls consist of a line of eight well marked buttons four LED's and a small numeric selector window.

You can of course print direct from Pict Bridge using your cameras TFT but the choices are few.

Copying needs no PC connected or installed and here copying of an A4 image with the default settings is 25 seconds in both colour and black, in both cases the quality was excellent and when printed on similar paper in some cases it was hard to tell the copy from the original.

Printing either A4 borderless prints or four images (via Epson Photo Print) of near 15x10cm size take the same time at almost exactly four minutes. This is a little slow with some recent 'high end' units taking only a tad more than a minute but to me the only thing that matters - within reason - is quality and the output is dry to the touch and the depth of field is excellent.
