Myth or Reality – Snowbound Secrets is a Hidden Object Adventure game. Domini Games, the product’s developer, has opted to place this particular offering in Northern Canada. Available in Collect’s Edition format, this title comes with a collection of bonus items to supplement the gaming experience. While some of these extra items can be accessed immediately, others will require progress to be made or even the completion of the main game before you can gain entry.
If you are familiar with Domini Games titles then you will be used to the wide range of options provided for settling up the working environment for playing the game. You can adjust various volume levels for different audio aspects plus view the game in full screen mode using a special cursor, adjust the brightness and turn on special effect. You are given the choice of playing the game in Casual, Advanced, Hardcore or Custom difficulty level.
While the game’s snowbound location of the area around Blue Roche does cause some problems when moving around, it can prove helpful in revealing footprints especially those of a larger variety. Offering further assistance is a mouse cursor that changes shape when over possible actions plus a number of tools available during the game. The main section of tools, arranged across the bottom of the screen, consist of a Journal, Map, Inventory, Strategy Guide and a Hint feature plus an occasional option to step back a scene in order to proceed.
Positioned, either side of the screen, are pop-out icons revealing details of Collectibles on the left and Decisions, made at certain points during the game, on the right. These points can affect the flow of the story line. Both of these icons will flash when they have information to impart.
The game seems to split itself into two parts. You start off by investigating whether Bigfoot actually exists and, once this has been achieved you can switch to a rescue mission as you try to protect the Bigfoot family from an unjustified attack from a local resident. While the various scenes portrayed in the game feature some animation with regards to weather conditions, any other animation tends to be limited to movement from the large version of characters featured in the game. Split screen and overlaid windows are used to good purpose throughout the game.
The game also features 21 Hidden Object scenes and 40 mini game puzzles. When tackling a Hidden Object challenge you could be faced by the task of finding lists of items from objects found in a scene or book. The list could be in text, combined symbols, patterns, and silhouettes or items of a specific type. In some cases the listed items might need to be repaired and then placed in a scene. If the Hidden Object challenge does not appeal then you can switch to Match 3 game play.
Mini game puzzle action also gives you a choice. You could either opt for an Easy or Hard version of the puzzle with the latter involving more elements of stages to complete. Among the various mini game puzzles are those that involve moving sections of an image in various ways to complete a supplied picture, arrange a path of footsteps, releasing flaps in order, arrange wires to make a connection between source and destination points and tune a violin. You also get to steer a sledge along an obstacle course, mix a potion and arrange puzzle pieces to fit a space.
I have to admit that at times it felt as if I was watching an old B movie containing characters whose behaviour was hardly logical. Actions were often carried out in this game without any apparent justification. You can download this disappointing title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99. or Big Fish Games where it is priced at £16.11. The game requires a 1.6 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM with 1.08GB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
