This unit is designed to take up to a 15.6inch notebook/laptop. It does however have room for a few extras so could be just about big enough to contain a spare shirt and socks etc so could just about constitute an overnight bag.

The first thing I do is discover how many pockets in unusual places such an item has. This I found even has its own raincover in a little zipped compartment near the base of the outside, something I think you will never find in normal use as it will be on its base.
Unzip the main compartment and you have the padded blue area at the rear for your notbook/laptop in front of that a 21x28.5cm padded area which could be for say a Tablet on the outside of this two 10.5x11cm pockets for bits and pieces. On the inside of the front a 24x22cm pocket and on the top area a 22x14cm semi-transparent pocket.
Now moving to the outside a 19x10cm padded zipped pocket with two 9.5x11.5cm open pockets on the inside of this. Moving down the front a 20x14cm zipped pocket and further down a 22x14cm zipped pocket that has two open pockets 8cm deep on the back together with two slim pen pockets. There is also a clip to hold a set of keys on a ring.
The base is a maximum of 28x15cm but there are straps to tighten this area if required. The maximum height is 49cm; near the top of the back is a grab handle when just picking it up.
Near the base of the right side is a small zipped pocket and on the left side an open pocket of the same size.
To place on your back both the padded straps are curved and a joining strap can be as low as 8cm from the bottom or as high as 22cm this slides up and down as required making the backpack extremely comfortable whatever you are carrying.
My unit was a dark grey colour apart from the inner part of the back that is a light grey airtex type of material that lessens sweat when wearing it on a hot day.
I made the weight 1.7kilos when empty.
While I have worn it out and about my travels are around metropolitan areas and while it was fine with what I had in it by the end of the day it seemed heavier and often it did end up with more in it than the start of the day.
I mentioned that a shirt and socks could go with a laptop often my usage was for a wider range of goods.
The main advantage of a backpack is that both hands are free and as such this fills the bill.
The Drifter backpack from STM is available from the link below for £78.85 with free delivery in Red, in Black it is over £15 dearer.
