Another title could have been drill or screw. The first not only does what you expect from an electric drill but a little more The second will screw and unscrew either or both could make excellent Christmas presents for those who use such items.

Hitachi Impact Drivers WH 18DSAL & DV 18DSDL

For those who think size is important then having a spare may also be important. Here I am looking at not one but two electric drills from Hitachi both are cordless and while one is larger than the other both have their place.

First the smaller one the WH 18DSAL, it is 23.5x14x5cm the height includes the battery pack but it is 11x7cm at the pack.

The first 12 pages of the Handling Instructions are in English which covers safety, charging the battery and fitting items in the chuck. The total weight is 1735grams and the unit comes with a charger unit to charge the WH 18DSAL.

When using this unit an LED light comes on which is useful when drilling in confined spaces or when light is scarce.

Now onto the more meaty DV 18DSDL this is 25x23x7cm apart from the base where the battery pack is 10.5x7cm. This unit weights 2.397kilos. It has its own set of documentation which runs to 15 pages in English.

The chuck is a lot larger thus allowing far bigger bits to be used. This has a two speed action changed from a slider on top. This also comes with a side handle to allow you to assert much more pressure when required.

The charger (usable with both) is 18x13x7cm and comes with a 1.8metre hard wired lead to a 13amp plug. An LED on the face has four settings to show you the current state of charge to the battery. The batteries are interchangeable.

The Hitachi combo set is available from the link below for £367.13 with free delivery.

Bosch PSR Select

This is a small electric screw driver that looks like drill it has however a very big plus that the heads it uses are contained within the unit and you select by rotation so you never end up with the one you require going AWOL.

It comes with a 1.4metre length lead to charge the units internal battery which from full discharge with charge in four hours. Everything including the instructions and charger are housed in a waterproof plastic case.

The unit has light on the front just below the screwdriver to light those difficult to access places where you normally need a third hard to operate. A green light on top of the unit tells you that charging is taking place; the DC power input is at the base of the trigger handle.

The trigger will only allow itself to be pushed in if the button above it is in either the insert or remove position.

It is 15cm from base of the trigger arm to the top and 16cm from the back to front with a screwdriver type exposed. The chuck has twelve different drivers which can be seen in a Perspex window as you rotate either way to get the one you want in the top chamber then push the red section on top of the unit forward to expose

For anyone needing to do jobs around the house – especially in those difficult to access places – this could be the answer it is available from the link below for £54.11 with free delivery.
