Microsoft Notebook Optical Mouse

Size is not everything – where have I heard that before? – at least with a Notebook mouse that is certainly true. Small it certainly is, but it still has two buttons and a wheel.

It is described as a notebook mouse however it could equally well be used on a desktop PC with one proviso, the model I had was USB and this could potentially cause problems if you are trying to install an operating system as Windows does not recognise USB until the desktop is reached.

8.5cm long, 5cm wide and 3cm tall, the total weight is less than 50grams even with the 75cm USB lead attached. So it can easily fit into a pocket or purse.

Lots of notebooks have those annoying pencil erasure type mice that never quite seem to do exactly what you want. Often you end up maximising a window when what you wanted to do was close it. Even the notebooks with the little area in front on the keys that you control with a finger leave something to be desired. In most cases you could always attach a full size mouse to a PS/2 port and providing you had a reasonable working area to the side of the notebook all is well. Then on the move again the mouse needs to be packed away and why does that lead always seem so long?

This is an optical mouse that works on any non reflective surface. I remember a few years ago seeing a very attractive lady demonstrate an optical mouse on her leg I don’t remember seeing much of what the mouse was doing on the screen! However with an optical mouse you do not need a mouse mat and any small flat surface will produce results as good as any corded rodent. Having the wheel means that you can scroll pages at ease when viewing long documents – another task the pencil erasure fails with – and accuracy within a package is also achievable.

I used this mouse on a notebook and indeed on a desktop, I do like a small rodent it fits easily in the hand and for those with smaller hands than mine the size of some mice must be massive.

Installation is non existent providing you are using Windows 98 or later and the box also says it works on a MAC. Plug the mouse in to a free USB port and after thinking for a few seconds Windows tells you that the mouse is installed. An optical mouse never gets clogged with fluff and the contacts never need cleaning as there are none.

There is only the one drawback to a USB mouse the inability of Windows to acknowledge USB before the desktop, still with a notebook you can always fall back with the pencil erasure should you ever need to reinstall from a command prompt. The street price is around £20-25, unlike a lot of bigger and more expensive rodents it is rectangular so the left handed are not penalised.
