PocketMouse Pro

Those looking for a mouse that is just a little bit different from the standard rodent might like to consider the PocketMouse Pro. This wireless mouse, from the Kensington Technology Group, can store its receiver inside its own body when it is not in use.

Suitable for both right and left handed users, the mouse is tastefully decorated in silver and black. Powered by two AAA batteries, the mouse is a two-button, rubberised wheel model which sits comfortable in the hand. An additional rubberised button, located on the upper left side of the mouse, opens a housing compartment that holds the wireless receiver when it is not needed. By placing the receiver in this compartment, you not only keep it safe from accidental damage or loss but it also has the effect of turning off the batteries so saving power.

The receiver plugs into an available USB slot. No additional drivers will be required when using Windows. The receiver will be automatically recognised as a USB device. To make the initially connection you will need to press a button on both the receiver and mouse base. Connection will be made using one of the 1,024 separate wireless frequency IDs that have been allocated to this device. With this number of available frequency IDs, there should be no problem using this mouse in a multi-user environment.

The body of the receiver can be swivelled to different angles so as to give the best possible reception. Kingston recommends a reception distance of up to1 metre. This compares unfavourable with other wireless optical mice which generally have a 2 metre range. In tests this range limitation proved to be fairly accurate.

This particular mouse uses an optical sensor that is capable of 800 DPI. It should ensure greater accuracy and control that you would get with the more traditional mouse ball variety. Battery life is estimated at four months which again compares unfavourably with the six months that Microsoft promise for its new optical mice.

Supported by a two-year warranty, the PocketMouse Pro should work on all versions of Windows from 98 onwards and MacOS 8.5 or later. While it is possible to program the various buttons on the PocketMouse Pro, Kingston does not supply the necessary software to achieve this task. Priced at £34.07, this mouse would be more suitable for a laptop user who is generally on the move and would appreciate the receiver storage facility.
