It is 44x28x17cm in its closed state. As paper is stored face down at the front base of the unit protruding by around 10cm in front of the scanner lid and the printed output is also delivered just above the store area face up, you need no real access to the rear of the unit. The total weight of the unit is 5.5kilos.
The scanner lid lifts landscape from the front and if you add around 5cm behind for the power input and USB 2 (will work with USB 1) input the total depth is around 43cm. So a space around 45x45x25cm should accommodate this unit very well the extra height is to easily place items on the flatbed scanner and to be able to see the TFT display clearly as it is mounted back right of the units top. The TFT 3.5x2.8cm has six positions from horizontal to near vertical and displays clearly.
At this point I could mention the claimed print speeds but regular readers will know I never achieve these so instead I will tell you I got between 8 and 12 PPM dependant on what I was printing. The output was a little off black (not really grey) but this was in fast draft mode, it would still be perfectly acceptable for a memo. In normal or best modes printing was somewhat slower but jet black.
The unit can also produce excellent results with digital photos, it has five slots and a Pict Bridge connector on the front right edge that accepts most card types. This enables direct printing using the TFT display and you still have control over zoom etc.
However should you store images on your PC then using the supplied software you can really expand and print multiple images on a single sheet. An A4 image printed on plain paper takes around a minute, ideal to check quality etc. The same image printed Borderless takes around 7 minutes, not that quick but quite acceptable. I also printed a range of images four to an A4 sheet and these took about the same time.
I have a stand alone photocopier but rarely use it as it is in another room and this HP unit can also copy in colour. There are 27 buttons in a group in front of the TFT screen, for a standard copy with the PC off you place the item to be copied on the scanner face down and then press either Black or Colour and less than a minute later (from cold) you have a copy. Make a few adjustments and drop the quality and you are copying numerous copies a minute, but what I described is the default setting from switch on.
Scanning can only be done within Windows but the software provided allows you to output to almost any application using TWAIN and there is also quite acceptable OCR software provided. The scanning can be up to 1200x4800 in 48 bit colour or 256 grey scale shades, it produced some of the best grey scale output I have seen.
An All In One (Multi Function Unit) by design saves a lot of space as you no longer need separate scanner and copier and the overall size is the same (or slightly larger ) than a standard printer. Of course you never get the print speed stated. The software bundle supplied allows the novice or more advanced user to get results by either accessing the component parts or operating through the front end and letting the software make the decisions. The link below takes you to the HP site and directly to the stats page. HP will sell you one for £150, www.dabs.com/uk will sell it for £147.99.
