Over the years I have attended hundreds of presentations and so often when I arrive the presenter is struggling to get his notebook to connect to the hotels projector and often even connected the resolutions do not match so the presentation looks strange.
Apart from the mains lead the back of the unit has twelve different connectors so whatever you are trying to connect should be covered providing you have the leads required.
The projector is 30x30x10cm and weighs 2.5kilos.
In the box is a mains lead, a remote control, a USB Wi-Fi dongle and a virtually unreadable six sides of A5 text, the two sides of diagrams are fine but the three sides of safety instructions are so small everyone would be running to their optician. Once on the Optoma website you can enter UHD55 and then navigate to download a .PDF file that covers everything you need to know.
So having removed the cover and shield from the remote control you can then enter required information using the remote control so that you can connect using Wi-Fi however this is very slow work using the built in keyboard as the only control is the five position up, down, left and right and you can easily connect a USB mouse to do this a lot faster on the same keyboard and this is especially useful if you wish to navigate to websites. However should the remote control go AWOL then the same controls are on the top of the projector so providing you have not ceiling mounted it they can do the navigation.
It takes around a minute from switch on to warm up and once you have used the ring around the lens to focus you are then ready to work or play.
The connections from left to right are USB 1, VGA, USB 2 where you insert the Wi-Fi dongle, Ethernet, RS232, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, USB 3, Opticle, 12V out and a pair of audio sockets.
I of course tried to plough on without reading the .PDF file and sent myself down several blind alleys before common sense said spend ten minutes reading the .PDF file and everything then became clear.
Assuming you are using a wall it’s easy to setup the projector to work for most light wall colours and the same set of menus allow you to set the Aspect Ratio to suit your files or media. You can also set more advanced things like colour contrast and even setup for 3D.
The projectors internal speaker was fine for most but should you want to binge on movies then maybe have external speaks for the full experience.
The Optoma UHD55 is still very new but is currently available from Amazon priced, at the time of publication, at £1872.59.
