DigiMemo A501

Image of author
Ever wanted to transfer your notes and jottings to a PC without the need to retype or worst of all redraw them. Then the DigiMemo could be for you.

It is 31x21x1.5cm and weights around 600grams. It has a writing/drawing area of 21x15cm. Before first use you need to insert 4xAA batteries in the unit and one watch type battery in the stylus/pen. This on first look appears to be an ordinary pen and whatever you write appears on the paper.

There are a total of five buttons one top right is on/off and the other four are in a row on the left side (all described in the manual) below a 2.5x1.5cm LED display. Switch on and start writing/drawing and you should now have the LED showing some lines to state that what your writing is going into memory. The internal memory is 8MB but it can also accept Compact Flash cards if this not enough for your use. Whatever you use a warning will appear in the LED when you reach 90% of capacity. The manual states that the 4xAA batteries should last for 100 hours of continuous use.

When you have pages captured they need to be transferred to the PC. Software is supplied on a CD-ROM and the installation is quick and painless. The interface is easy to follow however I found the manual makes little of perhaps the most important factor that when you attach the USB lead to transfer you need to browse to find what drive letter the unit has been given by Windows. I mistakenly assumed this was to select a folder to place the files in and it needed a call to technical support to sort this out. Perhaps better wording in the manual would make this clearer and possibly save a number of technical support calls.

In use I found it worked well and the copies were as clear as the originals. These pages can be saved in several image formats the most popular of which is jpeg. Pages can be manipulated within the supplied Windows software that allow touching up and adding colour to the images and otherwise beautifying your rough images etc.

A page or pages can be sent by email to anyone as an attachment however if the other person has the DigiMemo manager software that can be downloaded then the e-Book file can be emailed.

If you store pages on a Compact Flash card then you can transfer files to the PC via a card reader meaning the actual DigiMemo need not be present. It is possible to link many pages together and they do not need to be contiguous. I am told 66 pages can be stored in the 8MB of internal memory and up to 999 pages using a larger Compact Flash card.

The website describes the contents more fully, however the listing there makes it unclear if the all important special pen is included however I am informed that it is.

Not entirely sure about the range of use this may have, less weight than a notebook but bigger than a PDA and of course it is cheaper than either.

The unit can be purchased from the link below and it costs £86.74 inc VAT and p&p.
