While any port in a storm might offer protection in some circumstances, when it comes to your notebook you really need to consider a certain type of port.

Have you noticed, that despite being designated as a portable item, it is not all that convenient transporting your notebook from one location to another. Tucking it under your arm or sticking it in a spare supermarket carrier bag is not really to be recommended. Let's face it, either method is a recipe for disaster and could help explain the number of bags that have been designed specifically for the purpose of keeping your notebook secure when being moved from one location to another.
One company with a great deal of experience in the development and manufacture of bags for notebooks is PORT Design. Back in 1998, the company registered a patent for its MATT SYSTEM® protection. This protective system uses several layers of varying density absorption foam to reduce the impact of external shocks on the notebook. PORT Designs has a range of notebook cases in various colours including the Anthracite Chicago II bag which is the subject of this review.
The Chicago II range has models designed for notebooks with 14", 15" and 17" screens. A range of colours, including Camouflag, Chocolat, Framboise, Rose and Rubis, are available. Other basic features remain constant whatever the size and colour of the bag.
Adopting a traditional briefcase design, the Chicago II is constructed of a sturdy polyester material stretched over a wire frame with rivets and re-enforced stitching. Matt aluminium tags, bearing the PORT logo, feature on the zip which allows you to fully open the bag for easy inserting and removing the notebook from the central compartment which measures 400 x 300 x 50mm.
Extra padding runs round the edges of this compartment and two security straps are provided to hold the notebook firmly in place. In addition there is an adjustable padded divider, held in place by Velcro pads, in order to create an area for holding any leads. You also get a high density foam sponge band to help protect the screen when the bag is closed. Other storage areas include an internal document pocket plus an external pocket and slip case compartment with a protective flap.
The bag comes with a padded carry handle; shoulder strap with heavy duty spring clips; and a back strap to stabilise the bag when placed on a trolley. Rubberised non-skid feet on the base of the base help to keep it in an upright position when placed on the floor. The whole unit weighs 1.20Kg.
This is a basic bag that does away with any frills. Costing under £20, it should provide your notebook with protection when on the move. PORT Design offers a life time warranty with this bag.
