My Stuff Live/ What Hi-Fi Show thoughts!

Image of author
A quick summary of both shows which I attended today.

Before I say anything else, I must say Segway, Segway, SEGWAY!!!!!!

I didn't realise there would be one there, but Stuff Live had a Segway human transporter on demo.
I was really pleased I got have a go as Segways are so rare over here - even in London!

Doubt it'll be the World-shattering invention that it was originally hyped as, but it was really cool anyway.

(NO, I didn't fall off! )

When I first got to Stuff Live I was rather disapointed as it only took up the space of ground floor of Olympia's Grand Hall.
However, I did find many things to keep me occupied for a few hours.

The main products that stuck out were...

  • New Archos Jukebox: Impressive sized screen with very decent picture quality and no jerkiness. Was also rather light in weight. An excellent gadget but rather pricey. I actually prefer this unit to the much-acclaimed iPod.
  • Glasses with built in LCD screen: Yes, yes, I know that various 'TV glasses' have been marketed over the years, including possible the first pair which got it's public preview ten years ago in 1993 at the very first 'Live' exibition. No model has ever been sucessful and I don't think these will be either as they require the user to keep looking right to see the screen.
  • Mirror with built-in LCD screen: As seen on MTV Cribs! Basically a mirror with a built-in LCD screen that disapeers when turned off. And yes, it can be used in a bathroom! Sizes of screen (not the actual mirror) go up to 13 inches with the 5 inch model starting at a reasonable £500. I was impressed anyway.

I was quite impressed by the amount of exibitors at the What Hi-Fi show considering there was another major hi-fi show just a handful of miles away at Heathrow.

Toshiba have got a new DAVS-type DVD/surround sound system out and I really liked the sound considering it was a satelites/subwoofer system. Most certainly beats Sony's effort methinks!
Acoustic Energy's Aego system design looked good and I was amazed by NEC's HT1000 DLP projector. OK it wasn't a new product, but still looked great blown up to a massive screen size.

I stayed for about 6 hours in total and for my £10 admission I managed to get free copies of X-Ray magazine (complete with CD) and PC Format (complete with DVD-ROM), so a good day out for a decent price.
