Brother Garden Labeller

With Christmas only around three months away I will from time to time cover things that could be given as gifts, some quite reasonable and others for that special person. Lets start with something for anyone keen on gardening.

I have recently looked at two labellers from Brother one for the younger members and another for the office. Now how about one that is ideal for the gardener, it can be used to label seeds, pots or even shrubs in the garden as the labels are weatherproof, heat resistant, and perhaps most important fade proof. I have seen lots of very expensive plastic name tags written in permanent ink that still fade over the years with a combination of rain, sun, frost and humidity.

It is rectangular in shape and is a maximum of 19x11x5cm. Being marketed for gardeners it is green - not sure that's a great idea with so much in the garden being that colour - but is not the bright green of the younger persons item but more of a teal colour. It has 49 keys the alpha keys are cream with black letters while the rest are teal with white letters. Above this is the two line 4x1cm display.

This unit is battery driven using no less than six AAA batteries (not provided) and while they showed no sign of failure during my tests it must be a cost factor. If you are a heavy user it might be an idea to purchase the optional (G/G1) mains adapter.

The unit comes with a black on white tape, but lots of coloured tapes are available is 6 9 and 12mm widths. The packaging illustrates 22 different combinations of labels and text colours. There are two built in fonts and each is printable in ten styles including vertical that would be great for labelling a stake or cane where a shrub or plant dies back in winter. The tapes are 8 metres in length.

The main advantage of the modern labelling system is that anything you enter is not final until you press the print button, so layout, style and even your typing can be checked and changed should it be required.

The keys are small and oval being around 5mm across but they are well spaced so all but the really chubbiest of digits should work fine. It is simple to use so even the non computer literate person should have no problems and there is a perfectly adequate manual to describe in detail how to change fonts, styles and effects. Fitting the label cartridge is also well described.

Strangely this item is not shown on the brother site - or if it is I can't find it - however Brother price it at £34.99 and the site listed below offer it for £29.99 inc VAT so it would be a better buy from there anyway. I understand from a Brother employee that the company listed is the major supplier of this model.

Link http://www.touchlabelling.co.uk as this is an ideal gift some may prefer a phone number 01527 574910 Brother P-touch GL-100 Garden Labeller. You may need to click on their label icon, it's then the top item. Post and Packing is extra.
