First I must declare an interest. I have been a user of Wanadoo's Broadband service since its purchase of Freeserve. Apart from one brief hitch, I have been pleased with the service offered and would find it very hard to exist without the always-on capability and faster download speed. Having said that, I have to admit I have not yet experienced the new Wanadoo Wireless & Talk service but the recent announcement of an introducing offer certainly deserves being brought to your attention.
Launched earlier this year, the Wanadoo Wireless & Talk service provides users with both a fast, wireless Internet access from anywhere within the home environment and a secondary phone line that uses the standard Broadband service. Thus users get a voice over Broadband (VoB) service that Wanadoo claims "is a piece of cake to set up and use." Continuing the culinary theme, the proof of the pudding would be in the eating.
The Wanadoo Wireless & Talk service requires a special Wanadoo Livebox which is really a purpose built modem into which a normal touch tone phone can be plugged. The modem is supplied on load with no additional fee apart from the basic Wireless & Task subscription. Once set up members of the household will be able to make and receive more than one call at the same time without the need for any extra equipment over and above the Wanadoo kit. The Livebox modem will support multiple computers for simultaneous connections however this feature is depended upon some form of networking capability linking the computers.
There is no initial sign-up charge for this service nor any minimum length of contract required. You will need to return the Livebox if you cancel the contract at any time. New subscribers to the Wanadoo family who opt for the Wireless & Talk service will be able to take advantage of some special terms. According to Eric Abensur, Wanadoo UK's chief executive, "New Wanadoo Broadband customers who joined Wireless & Talk can make as many off-peak calls to UK landlines as they wish for six months - and receive no phone bills whatsoever. They will pay no monthly fees and no sign-up costs for their phone service."
Once this initial six month period has ended then there will be a monthly fee of £4. Other features of the service will give free calls at any time to other users of the Wanadoo Wireless & Talk service plus low rate calls to other countries. Plans are in hand to add, yet undisclosed, new Broadband services. Watch this space for any new information as it becomes available.
