The Motorola A920 on the three network
Appearance:
All though a little on the bulky side, the A920 really does prove that big can be beautiful. It has a sleek design that will have people try to catch a sneaky look at your phone when you are out and about.
Display:
The A920 has a large clear bright screen. The touch screen works is very responsive event when you are using your fingers instead of the stylus. Although on occasion the item you trying to press is just too small the finger.
Camera
Although suffering the usual .5 second delay between you requesting a picture be taken and the picturing being taken, the camera in good light takes a really bright clear photo (for and example see my photo on my profile). You can also record up to one minute of video to the same quality. In the dark the or low light the camera does its best to produce a good photo although in most a cases fails on this front.
Features:
The A920 come completed with usual phone related software (picture messaging etc). But has a built-in contacts, e-mail, calendar, Note Pad, Calculator, MP3 Player , Build in GPS and of course a video player. The phones comes as standard with USB Cable, desk caddy , two chargers ,two batteries and a host of PC software to allow you sync you contacts ,calendar and e-mail with your PC. The phone does not come with Bluetooth, although the handset has the hardware in place to make use of Bluetooth we are waiting for a firmware upgrade in November.
Battery Life
This is where things drop slightly the battery life is now very good. On a good day you will get around 10 hours out of the battery. But this soon drops if you start view videos or using the phone in anger whist you are out and about. A little tip if you would like to squeeze for life out of the battery then switch off the GPS.
Three Network
The three network is a very good network. I have no reason to complain, my calls are always clear and get straight through. Although I cannot yet send picture messages cross network. I have called three to ask why this is and they told me they are working with the other operators to come up with a solution. Hopefully in the next couple of months this will be sorted. But with the tariff being such excellent value for money, I can live with this very minor shortfall.
Three Network and A920
This is where things fall slightly. For some reason three have locked the A920 down. You cannot install applications onto the device that have not bee signed by three. Which means all of the good software that is out there for the P800 will not work. Although from what I hear a firmware upgrade will be available in November which unlock the phone some what. The web browser is also locked down to three content which is a desperate shame as you have the speed of the 3G network which could be used for so many things and it simply falls short. Although its nice to watch 30 second football clips and would much prefer to be able to browse the web the way I would like to. This of course means that you cannot download you own e-mail, you must use the three mail that comes with your account. Again I am told this will change soon with the business services come on line in the next few.
Overall
The A920 is an excellent phone packed with features and once the new firmware is out then the phone will be possibly one of the best on the market. The phone has now become and permanent fixture in my life.
