Bluetooth Enabled Communication

Fed up with holding your mobile phone to your eye? There is an alternative.

Bluetooth devices are becoming increasingly popular. A major factor in this trend is the use of mobile phones with a headset for a hands-free operation. You have probably seen people standing about looking as if they were talking to themselves. In fact there were probably conducting a two-way conversation using a mobile phone that was linked to a Bluetooth headset via wireless connectivity.

While some Bluetooth enabled phones are supplied with an appropriate headset, other units require an additional purchase. It is for this latter group that Plantronics has introduced its M2500 Bluetooth device. The headset, in my opinion a misnomer as it fits over the ear rather than the head, consists of an earpiece with a small microphone attached.

This stylishly curved device, coloured silver, grey and dark blue, is designed to fit on either ear by twisting the ear bud in the appropriate direction. A rubberised inner section helps with a snug fit and is fairly comfortable when long sessions are called for. Plantronics has included, for hygiene purposes, four replacement covers for the ear bud. The unit houses a status light, call control button and multi-function dial at various convenient positions. The multi-function dial can be used to adjust volume, switch to mute mode and turn the power off.

Before using this device you will need to charge it using the supplied power lead. This process should take approximately two hours and this will give around 120 hours of standby or five hours of talk time. Once charging has been completed, a light will charge colour from red to green. The next stage involves pairing the device with a Bluetooth phone. This process is reasonable straightforward and is explained in the Quickstart Guide supplied with the M2500.

The M2500 allows you to answer or reject a call; make a call using voice dialling; adjust the volume level; and even mute the microphone when other events need your full attention. All these tasks can be completed with your mobile phone out of sight in a pocket or bag. You will probably have to put up with some strange looks from those passing by but you can always ignore these and carry on with your conversations. The M2500 should be available for around £34 and will extra functionality to a Bluetooth enabled phone.
