By default it wants to use gestures but it’s easy enough to change to the older back/home/show all.
The right side has volume up/down and on/off buttons. The base has speaker, microphone, USB ‘C’ power input and SIM entry point. The left side is clear. The top has speaker and microphone.

Like all recent phones it’s all about the cameras and here the main camera is 100x. however to get an image at that amount of zoom needs a very steady hand I practiced and locked in on a brand image on a bag at the far end of my hall and with the phone resting on a desk got a decent image but it certainly was not the first attempt.
While it has an ultra-wide capture you cannot use this on video but you can take the normal ‘1’ down to ‘.6’ which could be a reason to purchase. It also has rather good low light ability. The front camera is 12MP.
It has Falcon Capture technology which allows blur free capture of fast moving things like horses and dogs.
This is not a cheap unit but if you measure it against the latest Apple its nearly £600 cheaper and is somewhat better in many categories. The latest Samsung is £450 dearer.
If you are in the market for a camera with lots of memory a fast refresh rate and mountains of storage but still a lot cheaper than the Apple or Samsung equivalent then this tick all the boxes.
At the time of publication the Honor Magic5Pro is available from Amazon for £949.
