Acer Chromebook Spin 511

This is one of the new breed of Chromebooks that give you much more functionality and even allows access to the Google Play Store and that also allows you to link to your Android phone. In fact it bears little resemblance to an early Chromebook that did not even have the ability to store things offline. This should really be considered a totally new category of product.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 511 measures 29.5x21.5x2cm and weighs 1212 grams. The viewable screen is 23.5x14.5cm which gives the notional diagonal imperial measurement of 11.6inches and this gives you a variable screen resolution of up to 1518x853 which may make text a little small for some but a slider lets you change it through a range of resolutions up to 911x512.

Going around the outside, on the left side is a small blue LED denoting power on, next is a USB ‘C’ then USB3. Micro SD slot and finally headphone socket. The front has insertion point for the stylus. The right side has USB3, USB ‘C’ and Kensington Lock Port. Either USB ‘C’ port can be used to charge the unit from the supplied lead and power brick or much lighter to carry a USB ‘C’ to USB cable.

The base has two landscape feet at the back and two portrait feet at the front just inside the small but effective speakers.

Bootup is only 8 seconds and shut down 2 seconds, by default it will open with whatever items you last used.

By having access to the Google Play Store gives you so much more functionality even if you do not link it to your phone.

All recent Chromebooks automatically update and also have Anti-Virus and security software built in.

This offering has ‘touch’ screen abilities either from your finger or the stylus but there is more as it also is a Tablet as well as a notebook as the screen rotates fully to rest on its back – once beyond 180 degrees the keyboard is electrically disconnected – so not only a Chromebook - but it also has the advantages of Android even to allowing it to use your phones data when out and about now we allowed a little freedom.

The ability to type using a keyboard is great when sitting, when moving around having a stylus to use within programs (Apps) is also great and for those times when you have to type when in Tablet mode there is the onscreen keyboard.

The only possible minus points are the display size and not having access to all programs one might use in Windows.

However if your life is email, the Internet and word processing / spreadsheets this is great, the right side USB ‘C’ also allows you to connect to an external monitor so one of the two problems has been solved.

This is a superb Chromebook that just works perfectly and costs for less than a similar Windows offering with touch.

The Acer Chromebook 511 is available from the link below for £346.19.
