The KAMI Outdoor Wire Free Camera measures 13cm from front to back and the body is round at 6.5cm, it is heavier than most at 402grams.
The majority of the weight is the four solid rechargeable batteries stated to last between 4 and 6 months between charging. These are each 6cm long and round at 1.5cm each of the four batteries weigh 46.5grams. The back 9cm of the housing unscrews to allow the batteries to fit into the centre of the unit.
The special batteries require the supplied special charger which is supplied together with a USB to USB ‘C’ lead and 13amp plug to USB.
I found that the four batteries arrived nearly fully discharged; each section has a red and green LED, the first battery charged in 140 minutes and the last 230 minutes, so no guessing when the batteries are fully charged.
Like most recent security cameras it runs from an App which is easily downloaded from the iOS or Android store. You will need a Free account, enter email, password, repeat password and then it asks for code this had me searching for a non-existent code until I realised it wanted the Catcha image shown near it, do not enter the image shown as it will have expired click on renew and enter that image.
During setup you will need to enter the QR Code on the rear of the camera. Unlike some other units that first require you to link to a dummy connection before returning to your own Wi-Fi this goes directly to your Wi-Fi.
Linking is straightforward at around two minutes. Once linked you get an alert sent to your SmartPhone within seconds of an alert happening.
By default you get six second clips saved to the Cloud for seven day. Longer clips – up to thirty seconds - can be created for a monthly fee, the first month is free but you will have to enter a credit card.
I found the colour images were clear and sharp and unlike some cameras they can be shown landscape and the view at the sides of what is immediately visible can be seen by touching your phones screen.
Clips can have sound but annoyingly you have to unmute before every viewing. At night a decent monochrome takes over. Currently an alert like breaking glass or a loud noise cannot trigger an image or video.
Videos can be stored locally on a micro SD Card.
The advantage of a wire free camera is no holes to drill through walls; the disadvantage is that you will need to climb a ladder every few months.
