A few months ago I took a look at WowWee’s Fingerling® UNTAMED™ family of Raptors made up of Stealth, Blaze, Fury and  Razor.  Now it seems that some of these vicious creatures were not as susceptible to training methods as they should have been and were less likely to respond to the training offered by their young owners.  Eager to help when this type of situation occurs occasionally, WowWee has developed its Fingerling’s Untamed Jailbrake T-Rex Playset.  This product immediately gained recognition as a member of the latest DreamToys Top 12 Toys listing.

Priced at £24.99, the Fingerlings Untamed Jailbrake T-Rex Playset product consists of a Fingerlings  Untamed T-Rex dinosaur, a cage into which untamed dinosaurs can be held captive until they calm down and respond to their owner, plus separate User Manuals for the cage and the dinosaur elements.  You also get the product’s packaging which can be used, due to the art work, as background scenery for when the child is playing with this toy.  In order to gain the full benefits of this background scenery then some care will need to be taken when unpacking the product.

The T-Rex has a black and dark grey colour scheme with red highlights which certainly add to the threatening look of the creature.  There is also the threat of the sharp teeth and claws..  Included in the box, and already inserted into the body of the dinosaur, are four  button style batteries (IR44) which provide the power needed by the dinosaur as it responds to the child and different situations. .  When replacing these batteries a Philips style screwdriver will be required.  The T-Rex, once recovered from the packaging and the power switch, located on the back of the dinosaur, turned on will be ready for action. 

For those not too familiar with Fingerlings toys, they can be mounted on a finger when being petted or interacting with other objects.  Activation points on the T-Rex tend to be concentrated on the dinosaur’s head.  You will need to target the nose, top of the head and back of the head to get a response.  These reactions include sound effects such as grunts, growls, sneezes, roars plus even a promise of a song although I have yet to hear one from my review sample.

A Jailbrake does need somewhere from which the jailbrake can be made by those attempting to escape from confinement.  In this case the escape is made from a cage with a carry handle for transporting it between locations.  The cage is constructed from dark grey plastic and. has dimension of 17 x 15 x 18 cm (D x W x H).  All the sides of the cage, apart from the base, offering plenty of viewing options so that the T-Rex can be closely observed.. 

Several of the elements making up the cage can come loose either during the actual jailbrake, following an accidental knock or, as in my case, the delivery of the product.  Despite the illustrated User Manual, the re-assemble of the cage is not the easier task.  I struggled with this rebuilding task and felt the process needs to be simplified and improved..

With the cage re-assembled, it can hold one or two dinosaurs which sit side-by-side when in the cage.  The dinosaur(s) need to be mounted on raised peg units protruding from the floor of the cage.  Having closed the door unit of the cage, thus trapping the dinosaur(s), the child can rotate a lever on the outside of the cage and this will raise a platform on which the peg is situated and where the dinosaur sits.  The platform raising action will cause the dinosaur to shoot forward and knock down the barred door as it escapes.  Any second dinosaur would be able to leave the cage when it felt like it as it escaped unhindered.   The cage will then need to be rebuild for any subsequent prison escapes.  Hopefully this will not prove too stressful for whoever has to do the rebuilding.
