WordPerfect Office 12 (Home Edition)

Image of author
WordPerfect a name that anyone of a certain age will immediately recognise as the only word processor worth knowing about, nowadays it currently seems to play second fiddle to Microsoft Word.

However the box has a large 'Microsoft Office Compatible' notice and for any younger person to consider it this is a requirement. The box says there are eight packages in the box, my take would be somewhere between 7½ and 7¾ as any time limited version -as one product is- can not be considered anything like a full product.

Firstly then that ¼ product a 90 day copy of Norton Internet Security 2005, this is also responsible for around ½ the installation time. I have also given between a ¼ and a ½ a package for the Task Manager product that is the glue that holds all the products together. Even though the other seven packages can be used alone for the novice user this front end 'hand holds' very nicely and allows you to concentrate on what you want to do rather than worry about which component can do it.

WordPerfect is an excellent word processor and if a succession of owners had bothered to put a bit of money into it then Microsoft Word may not have had such an easy ride to number one. Now Corel have decided to promote it more but promoting it's Word compatibility will be a requirement for a considerable time.

Quattro Pro the spreadsheet package is not quite compatible but differences are slight and it should not cause major headaches for any normal user.

As this is a 'Home' product there must be a financial module and Personal Finance Essentials is that, allowing an eBook and Templates to help you create and keep budgets and manage investments.

It would not be Corel if there were not extras - often lots and lots of fonts - but here Encyclopaedia Britannica Ready Reference 2005, this contains 25,000 articles and also has instant access to Webster's Dictionary and Thesaurus as well as a one year subscription to Encyclopaedia Online.

Corel Photobook, this Photo Editor allows you to edit and enhance your photos.

Corel PhotoAlbum, this Photo Organizer allows you to arrange your images into Digital albums and more.

The final package is Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD (version 8 LE version) this can take care of most of your CD and DVD burning.

I am pleased to say this comes in a box and while manuals are not what they were you do get some documentation. 1.4GB of hard disc space will be required to install everything. It will work of Windows 98SE or later but be warned if you have Windows XP it will only work with SP2. On the Corel UK site (link below) it is only £57.57,  certainly excellent value.

WordPerfect 12 has been around for a good while now and is available for as little as £15.97 from vendors like Amazon :
