Canon IXUS 155

Canon make two ranges of small cameras the very tiny – but powerful – IXUS and the slightly larger – but a lot smaller than they used to be – PowerShot. Here an IXUS offering don’t dismiss it because it’s small as it’s still a very good camera.

The Canon IXUS 155 measures 9x5.6x2.5cm and weights only 140grams. The last measurement the thickness can increase by up to 3.5cm when the lens is fully zoomed.

This is a 20MP camera with 10x optical zoom. These are impressive figures backed up by the quality of its CMOS which is what determines the quality of the images you shoot.

Press the Function Set button to get a simple range of choices. Canon use L, M1, M2, S and Wide as there way of showing the capture size. L is 20MP 5152x3864, M1 is 10MP 3648x2736, M2 is 3MP 2048x1536, S is 640x480 and Wide is 5152x2896. The description also shows what size of image should be printable from that size they are A2, A3. 13x18cm, eMail and wide size prints so you do not need to know if you want 4:3 or 16:9 etc.

For videos there are two modes 1280x720 and 640x480, it even tells you how many minutes your current card will shoot for in that resolution.

So a quick trip round the camera. The face has the flash top right and this can never be nearer than 2.5cm to the 4.3 to 43mm lens. The left side is clear and the right side only has the anchor point for the supplied wrist strap.

The base has a tripod screw and the solid battery bay door behind which is the place you insert any SD card you may use. The top has a pin hole microphone and two silvered buttons the smaller one is flush this is for on/off and the larger slightly exposed is the shutter release around this is the wide angle/zoom adjuster.

This leaves the back which is dominated by the 5.5x4cm TFT display this is 2.8inches using the modern diagonal imperial way of measuring. To the right of the screen are four buttons and the ubiquitous five position joystick that are the top level of control, these are all well marked.

The Smart Auto mode selects from 32 variables so it should mean even a total novice should be able to get reasonable images straight away. This is backed up by Intelligent IS. Once you know a little more delve into the menu system and try some of the effects available.

You can instantly switch from still image to movies by pressing a single button. Also for the novice some rather good software is provided to allow you to manipulate results on your PC.

The only thing not provided in the box is a SD card, for those wanting to take full advantage of the excellent zoom then I would suggest you also purchase a tripod.

This is a nice easy to use camera ideal for the novice who wants more than taking selfies on a camera phone. A good 20MP image can be zoomed into to find great detail, a steady 10x zoomed image will also show things you did not see with your eyes.

The Canon IXUS 155 is available from the first link below for £117.99 for the black unit I was sent, I see pink, blue, silver and white versions are available at slightly different prices.
