Powererstixx 2.1 Speakers

Designed by Porsche is not something you immediately think of when talking about speakers, cars are far more likely. However these speakers are not anything like bulk standard boxes.

The Powerstixx 2.1 speakers are two speakers and a sub woofer. The speakers are a little like single candlesticks 25cm tall and a maximum of 15cm round, there are two speakers near the top. The sub woofer is a far more substantial piece of wood being 31x31x16cm. I would guess the weight of the sub woofer to be a little over six kilos.

The speakers are 6 watts each while the sub woofer is 30 watts. Neither are likely to blow the roof off but give a very acceptable sound in a largish room.

I found very little wrong with the unit but the whole lot is controlled by a single remote that is 9x5x1.5cm (batteries are provided) and should this become lost you are certainly ‘cream crackered’. In fact when I first unpacked the unit and plugged the mains lead into the sub woofer the power light came on but the remote did nothing. In fact I had to follow the procedure to replace the batteries by unscrewing the remote case as one of the batteries was slightly out of place and not connecting properly. Since then it has performed correctly and I have deliberately shaken the remote many times to see if I could recreate the problem.

Both the speakers and the sub woofer and indeed the remote are black. I suppose the speakers are stylish but I am no fashion judge, I have asked a couple of ladies what they thought of the speakers and they approved.

My interest is purely the sound they dispense and this was excellent, part of the tests were conducted using a CD\MP3\WMA player reviewed on the 26th August. In all modes these speakers produced good output in the total range. I then connected them to a PC where the sound was superb and even attached them to my Hi-Fi (are there still such things?) where I was perfectly satisfied with the output.

I suspect most people would use the speakers with say a flat panel in a PC environment, here the sound makes a pair of ordinary speakers seem totally naff. Each speakers angle can be independently adjusted. I would always place the sub woofer on the floor and there was ample cable length to allow this. I tried the sub woofer on both wood and carpeted surfaces and both were fine.

I have two problems, firstly the price but as I have said previously with designed items they are never cheap, and, secondly the total relyment on the remote control. It has separate + and – settings for the sub woofer and the speakers as well as a button to change inputs. Yes the unit has two inputs so you could have say a PC and an MP3 player connected to the unit and a single button press can switch between the two.

The price from the link below is £95.72, however Meroncourt also supply dealers and you may find one willing to sell the speakers at a lesser price.
