The Gateway Back

With a gem of an idea, this next title takes you on a nightmarish journey of facing the dead in a remastered title.

The Other Side - Tower of Souls, originally published by Alawar, is a Hidden Object title that has been remastered by Tiki's Lab.  Available in Collector's Edition format, this excursion into a dreamlike environment is based on a tower that no longer exists yet requires your expertise to combat the various problems in will bring to everywhere.

Once upon a time, as generally occurs in a tale of a certain genre, there was a tower that belonged to wizards.  The importance of this tower is that it held a gateway to the world of the dead.  If did not take too long before the residents of this departed world tried to return to their original home of the land of the living through the provided entry point.  The only way to stop this influx of the walking dead was to block the gateway using the souls of the living.  Not surprisingly volunteers to be sacrificed were hardly plentiful.  It was also found that, as time passed, the human soul sacrifice did not prove to be as efficient as it used to provide.  Thus you have been enlisted to provide a possible solution by playing this remastered version of the game.

When playing the game, you have a choice of Easy or Challenge difficulty with the former using sparkles to indicate certain areas to target, a fast Hint feature and easier mini game puzzles to complement Hidden Object scenes.  Whatever your choice of difficulty, you will be cast in the role of a Supernatural Detective as you respond to a cry for help regarding dealing with this mystical tower.

The call for help comes from a girl named Lily who wanted you to find out more about the tower.  Arriving at the location where you expect to meet Lily and investigate the tower, you discover that there are just ruins and no tower,  Suddenly a cat materialises out of thin air wearing both a vest and a Cheshire grin, the cat then hands you a medallion.  Placing the medallion on a nearby grave causes the tower to reassemble itself from the surrounding ruins and your nightmare journey begins as you enter the reconstructed tower and encounter two sisters, the expected Lily and Beatrice.

The two sister have different views regarding the Tower of Souls and its ability to provide an entry point for the recently diseased to return from the dead.  One sister wants the tower shut down while the other sibling feels it should be thrown open for everybody's use.  You must decide which sister to support before the gateway opens of its own accord thus allowing the dead to return.

In order to help with your choice, you will be provided with various tools.  Arranged across the bottom of the various current scenes will be a recording of your activities, an inventory of items collected plus tools to step back to a previous level, highlighted areas of interest and a suggestion on your next move.  Additional help will be provided from the vest-wearing cat which answers to the name of Boris.

Your journey through the many levels of this tower, with an occasional side-room to explore, could be described as a dream gone mad as what appears to be simple tasks will require complicated solutions as bodies are dissected and mechanical constructions take over the environment.  You may be the one making the decisions but it is the tower that rules the roost.  Everything you see could be real or, just as possible, as an illusion.  You have to make the decision as to which sister is telling lies and who should you support. as you carry out tasks that include making use of a special clock which allows you to move backwards and forwards through time in your search for solutions and what do the 100 cat paws dotted throughout the tower have to do with solution this game.

If you are susceptible to nightmares then maybe you should avoid playing this game late at night but playing this game will certainly improve your out-of-the-box playing skills.  I downloaded my copy of this title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99.  You could also download it from Big Fish Games priced at £15.39.  The game requires a 1.6 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 0.97GB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
