With this next title in the Gaslamp series, Morgan and Jack return to help villagers deal with problems involving Automatons.

Gaslamp Cases 9 The Ghost of Automaton City

With Gaslamp Cases 9, e-Funsoft brings us its Match 3 offering of The Ghost Automaton City.  As with other titles in the Gaslamp Cases series, this tale relates the adventures of a pair of Victorian detectives.  This duo always manage to become involve in various situations without any apparent effort on their part and thus provide a gaming situation.

In this particular instance, the two friends are driving along a country road when a sudden storm causes them to crash their vehicle.  Abandoning their damaged vehicle, our two heroes set off to get assistance from the villagers of Lirhaven who are suffering from the effects caused by Black Rain inflicted on them by the evil force of Mercurus, a local deity.  However seeing the state the village was in, the two detectives of Morgan and Jack forget their troubles and set about solving the villagers' problems as their prime objective.

Investigating the villagers' problems will require the completion of over 70 levels of Match 3 action.  This action will feature a grid filled with tiles and an assortment of block elements.  You will need to complete a specific challenge consisting of appropriate tiles through the process of creating groups of three or more similar tiles by switching two adjacent tiles.  Further assistance in removing tiles is provided by supplied power-ups.  Additional power-ups, in the form of bombs can be created groups of five or more tiles to assist the removal of awkwardly positioned tiles.

As each Match 3 level is completed, you will be awarded a number of stars stars.  These stars can be used to purchase and activate the five upgrades allocated to each of the five chapters making up this game.  Following each upgrade will be a cut-scene that advances the game's story line.  Generally featuring two static characters standing either side of the screen and communicating with printed and spoken dialogue, these scenes can be cut short when in a hurry to return to grid action.

These scenes will explain how the two detectives discover a city full of modern technology that has been constructed by automatons.  As progress is made in the game, details will emerge regarding agents of the Scarlet Sun who are on the trail of work developed by a scientist called Prof Ratner.  In the meantime the two detectives will unravel some of the city's mysteries.

Rather disappointingly this e-Funsoft offering fails to use the new features of mini game puzzle action introduced in the previous title from the company and suffered as a result.  I downloaded my copy of this title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99.  The game is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £7.84.  The game requires a 1.5 GHz processor with 1024M of RAM and 188MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
