A Blissful Rose Device

A KVM device can provide extra space for your working environment. While those with just a single computer might not feel the need for such a device, it can perform a useful task when two computers sit side-by-side on your work desk. With a KVM device you can use a single keyboard, monitor (video) and mouse attached to both computers.
But why would you want, you may ask, to carry out such an operation? Basically the answer is two-fold. First there is a cost/quality consideration especially with regards to the monitor. If you just need to purchase one, rather than two items, then there is an immediate cost saving or you could opt for purchasing better quality and more feature-rich units. The second reason, as I have already referred to, is a definite saving on workspace also for those such as myself, you do not get confused and start to use the wrong mouse or keyboard when attempting to perform a task.
One such KVM device is entitled Bliss why this particular name I have no idea but Bliss it is. Bliss has been developed by Rose Electronics specifically for the UK market. For those unfamiliar with the company, Rose Electronics is well versed in the manufacture of switch boxes and is also responsible for the switches that control the American nuclear armament program. However the Bliss device operates in a less threatening environment as it provides the means of controlling two computers from one keyboard and mouse and using a single monitor.
The kit consists of a small semi-circular unit that houses various connector switches on the front and permanently attached cables sprouting from the back. You can attach the keyboard, monitor and mouse to the front of the device and then use the rear cables to link to the appropriate ports on the two computers. .
The shorter (060cm) lead needs to be attached to the local computer using PS/2 connection. This computer will be designated 1. The longer (180cm) lead, with the USB connector, needs to be attached to the second computer which, not surprising, is referred to as 2. According to this products data sheet, you can connect one system using PS/2 connection for mouse and keyboard and have a choice of PS/2 or USB for the second system. However this will only work if you possess an appropriate adaptor to convert the USB connector to PS/2. You will also need to supply the connection leads to link the Bliss device to a keyboard, monitor and mouse.
While I must admit I did not enjoy the experience of crawling about on all-fours to make the necessary connections, this feeling soon disappeared as I regained valuable space on my work area. I could almost say I was in a state of bliss but perhaps not. Simply pressing the designated hot key sequence switched me between a system running Windows 98 and one running Windows XP with both being controlled by a wireless keyboard and mouse. LEDs on the Bliss unit indicate which computer is currently active.
Unfortunately, due to the short length of one lead, I was forced to position the Bliss device under my desk where I could not see the LEDs. This length problem would be my only criticism of this product which has been priced at a very reasonable £38.76. Those with more than one computer and a need for more space should put this device at the top of their shopping list.
