Canon i80 Portable Printer

Image of author
Sometimes lack of size is vital, this is the latest portable printer from Canon. Should you have no power it can even print from batteries. It is not just USB but infra red and with an adapter Bluetooth.

Over the recent years I have been fortunate enough to see all the Canon portable printing options. The latest is the i80, the dimensions are 31x16x5cm and the total weight is 1.8kilos.

The lid folds up to give a paper input tray to hold around a dozen A4 sheets. The bottom of the front folds down to allow the printed page to output onto your desk.

You may think this is a basic printer, wrong. It can print 4800x1200 with the latest 2pl micro nozzles, some of the photo prints were excellent. There is one drawback, the ink cartridge size, they are tiny, a three colour for colour and a small black so you will need deep pockets for ink.

Unusually today this brand new printer is not USB2 (although it works fine on USB 2 ports) this I was told because of the size of the print head making data transfer at USB 1.1 speed perfectly adequate.

However it is no slouch, I doubt you would ever print multiple copies of documents but for a 200 word memo I got 10PPM and for a real 1500 word document spread over four pages 7PPM. As always this is not up to the stated speed but not a light year away either.

It can print borderless at both A5 and A4 and while this takes longer than bordered prints the quality is excellent either way and the claimed 55 seconds for a bordered A5 print is not far off. For a borderless print at the same size the actual time is around 84 seconds. In my tests A4 bordered took 147 seconds and A4 borderless took 246 seconds, both excellent considering some printers can take up to 10 minutes to print a A4 bordered print. The quality was very good but do remember the small cartridges.

If you install all the items on the CD-ROM you will use a massive 155MB of hard disc space. Not so long ago a printer driver came on a single floppy disc, those were the days. However the Easy Photo Print software provided is excellent and intuitive, far better than Microsoft’s offering in Windows XP.

Being able to print infra red is always useful if you have a PDA and now the i80 can also print Bluetooth (with an adapter) and this will become more important as the technology take up increases. This unit is brand new and so no street price as yet, but the Canon price is £199, my guess as to street price about £180, available next month.
