With more and more devices now connecting to USB ports the available ones soon fill up, if you have a modern machine with a couple of ports on the front changing items need not result in a slipped disc, however more access to ports is still important.

I have long used a hub but then I tend to have more items connected.
The rear of the PC seems to become less and less accessible or it is me
that is becoming less mobile?
Until recently the only USB2 availability I had was via a USB2 PCI
card and getting to it to plug new items in was not an enjoyable task.
Now I have a new PC with six USB2 ports so no more need for a hub?
After a few weeks I disagree certain things like pen drives and digital
cameras are only plugged in when required and the two ports at the
front are full. Bite the bullet and plug a four port hub into the back
still some room there and the 1.5metre connection lead allows these
four extra ports to lie within easy reach. There is a supplied power
adapter but most of the time it was not required.
The unit is around the size of a small bar of soap 9x7x1.5cm. No
sharp edges as it is oval with rubber sides. The up port connects on
the left side, the four user ports are spread along the front edge with
the power adapter fitting on the right side. The top of the unit is a
clear smoked black plastic, a red right comes on when there is a
connection to the PC and a green light for each occupied port.
I managed to connect both hi speed and low speed devices in tandem
without affecting the speed of high speed reading and writing for such
devices as hard discs and DVD writers.
Permanent devices such as printers and CD writers I still connect as
the rear of the PC but all other devices that move around, or, are only
on short review get a front plugging and those extra four ports are
well used. I cannot see the need for more than one hub - mind you I
never thought six ports would be used but the product design with the
rubberised surround allows you to stack hubs on top of each other,
should that be required.
Reading the box produced a statement that you may find of interest
Belkin Lifetime Product Warranty For the life of the product. Belkin
warrants that this device shall be free of defects in design, assembly,
material, and workmanship (free replacement or comparable product).
If my understanding of the above is right if your hub dies after ten
years they will replace it, that sounds to me like an excellent
guarantee. The price is around £24.65 (Simply.co.uk) not the cheapest
hub around but I know of no other manufacturer offering free lifetime
replacement.
