Kensington WiFi Finder Plus

Image of author
A simple tool to do a simple job, it is small enough to fit on a keyring and yet it will not only do the job it is designed for but another and just for good measure it even acts as a torch.

It is a maximum of 9x4x1cm including the substantial link that allows you to place it on a keyring. The weight is less than 50grams including it's battery.

The Kensington WiFi Finder Plus will find out where the best signal is, surely something that is far more simply done with this small gadget than opening your notebook and after waving it around finding no signal.

It works using five green LED's that a single press of the button on the unit for Scan mode this then cycles quickly through the LED's around five times and if there is no signal the first LED turns red and remains on for a few seconds.

There is another mode Search Mode where you press and hold the button. In this mode you move the unit around and it will show decreasing or increasing strength of signal quickly and easily.

As such this a useful little gadget ideal for anyone who uses Wireless Hot Spots especially when you travel around a lot and do not have any idea where they maybe.

The second job is connected as that is to detect Bluetooth devices at the end of a cycle of the green LED's a larger Blue -it had to be didn't it- LED lights for a few seconds to show that at least one Bluetooth device is within range. As Bluetooth devices are normally only a few metres away this is perhaps of less use on it's own but it is a nice bonus. There is a device within the WiFi Finder Plus to filer out false signals from  other 2.4GHz signals such as from cordless phones and microwave ovens.

The last item is something that we should all have on a keyring a torch, this is nothing special but when the lights blow it could well help you find the fuse box, it is only a yellow/orange light but better than nothing, it is activated by holding down a rubberised button on the underside of the unit.

The substantial screw link means you could be reminded of the main thing that Kensington do their notebook locks that allow you to go away from your desk and for the notebook still to be in place when you return.

A nice gadget that performs a simple straightforward task, something that anyone who needs Wireless Access will find extremely useful. This is a very new enhanced product and finding a UK price is not easy around £20-25 I would think.
