Wireless PC Lock

Image of author
Walk away from your PC and it automatically becomes locked, nothing on the screen and no access, return and you are exactly where you were and no passwords to enter.

The Wireless PC Lock from Sitecom is a USB device that looks just like a Pen Drive, it plugs into a USB port and with a small software program on the supplied CD your PC is then safe from prying eyes.

The other part is a circular 2.5cm disc with a clock battery inside this attaches to a keyring and whenever you move more than two metres from your PC the screen blanks. Come back within the two metre range and your screen displays whatever was there before at whatever point you were working.

At the end of the short installation you are asked to enter a password and should the unit be unavailable you can enter the password to allow you to continue working. The unavailable can be either the battery powered circular disc that fits on the keyring or the USB plug (pen drive) should somebody remove it from the USB port.

The package contains a small manual (four sides in English) that takes you through installation but once the CD is installed and you start setup.exe everything is displayed clearly on the screen. The packaging also contains a USB extension lead should you only have rear USB ports so the USB plug (pen drive) can be connected to a rear port without causing problems.

It works on Windows 98SE or later and while the PC will discover the USB device you do need to run the setup.exe on the provided CD and follow the prompts to activate it.

There are four modes to use the Wireless PC Lock in, these are set or changed from an icon in the Windows tray somewhere near the clock in the right corner of your PC’s display. Normal Mode that I have already described. Lock Down Mode where the screen displays the blank Sitecom screen this can be set from the tray icon or by turning the wireless transmitter off. Fast Locking activated by double clicking the icon in the taskbar. Finally Password Locking that only allows the PC to be unlocked by entering the Password.

A password can be up to 64 alpha numeric -case insensitive- characters, do not forget it. While this is not rocket science it will stop the casual peeper and during my testing period the PC behaved exactly as I expected, and as stated. If you work in a small office environment with several PC’s this could have it’s uses and it is simple to use. Maybe you have your own office that you need on occasions to leave unattended, again this would fit the bill.

Two things to remember do not leave your keyring by the PC and do not forget your password. Sitecom products are available widely through dealers or you could purchase it from the link below at £39.48
