As well as the two Alcatel smartphones, covered in an earlier report, TCL Communications also announced the launch of the company's all-new TCL 20 series of products at CES 2021. Taking on the role of the initial entries to this series are the TCL 20 5G and the TCL 20 SE.
Described as the company's first 5G-capable smartphone to launch at under the £300 price point, the TCL 20 5G product comes in a choice of Mist Gray and Placid Blue. With a 2.5D glass front and 3D back cover, this handset has dimensions of 166.2 x 75.5 x 9.1 mm (H x W x D) and weighs in at 206g. Side mounted buttons provide access to power, volume adjustment and a link to Google Assistant.
Dominating the front of the handset is a 6.67-inch FHD+ Dotch display. The screen has been designed to produce an enhanced display and video streaming experience through the use of the company's award-winning NXTVISION technology plus support for HDR10 video playback. The screen can also take advantage of features such as SDR-to-HDR real-time conversion tool.
Acting as the smartphone main photography aspect, the TCL 20 5G has a tri-camera arrangement on the rear of the unit. This arrangement consists of a 48MP camera supported by an 8MP wide-angle camera and a 2MP macro camera. As well as still image capture, using features such as 10x digital zoom, auto-focus, HDR, Light Trace mode, panorama mode, scene detection and Slo-Mo mode, video can be captured at 4K@30fps or 1080p@60fps. Completing the smartphone's camera facility is the front-mounted 8MP Selfie camera. This camera has built-in features that include Face Beautification, portrait modes and a variety of filters.
With this model TCL has gone with a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 6905G Mobile Platform chipset. This consists of a Qualcomm Kryo 560 Octa-Core made up of 2x Kryo Gold ([email protected]) + 6x Kryo Silver ([email protected]) CPU and Qualcomm Adreno™ 619L. Providing the interface between the handset and the user is Android 10 which can be upgradable to Android 11. Models will be available with 6GB of RAM and either 256GB or 128GB of ROM. Power will be delivered from a 4500 mAh battery.
Currently available in Italy, this TCL 20 5G handset will be rolled out across multiple countries later this year priced at €299.
Announced at the same time as the TCL 20 5G is the TCL 20 SE. This handset, available in either Nuit Black or Aurora Green, has dimensions of 172.08 x 77.14 x 9.1 mm (H x W x D) and weighs 206g. As with the other recent handsets from the company, the TCL has three side-mounted keys covering features such as power, volume adjustment and Google Assistant.
The smartphone's screen is a 6.82-inch Vnotch display. It has a 90% screen-to-body ratio. This screen delivers a 720 x 1640 pixel HD+ resolution. Capable of delivering 16.7 million colours, this capacitive screen features a Smart Floating Windows that allows the user to browse the Web or view messages while watching videos. There is also support for enhancing video playback through the use of SD-to-HDR technology.
Positioned on the rear of the handset is a four-camera arrangement. Along with the main 16MP camera, this arrangement includes a 5MP wide-angle camera, 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth camera. The user can also take advantage of features that include dual LED flash, 4x digital zoom, face detection, scene detection and Light Trace plus a new AI Object Eraser to remove people or objects from the background of a scene. The front-mounted 8MP camera provides Selfie and video capture facilities.
The TCL 20 SE is built around a Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 chipset. This consists of the Qualcomm Kryo 240 Octa-Core CPU plus Qualcomm Adreno 610 GPU. This handset comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of ROM. Power comes from a 5000 mAh battery. The TCL will be available in multiple countries and will be priced at £149 in the UK.
As yet I have not been able to lay my hands or eyes on these models. Hopefully this situation will soon change as units become available.
