Corel Photo Album 6

Image of author
A product that came out of Corel’s purchase of Paint Shop Pro around a year ago. Corel have enhanced it and - being Corel - have added extra value.

The whole purpose of Photo Album 6 is to allow people with little knowledge to be able to improve their photographic images, simple things like ‘red eye’ can of course be handled but it also includes a complete set of ‘makeover tools’ enabling one click improvements to be make. Ideal for those who are less than happy using a computer let alone using a piece of editing software.

Sadly this only works with Windows 2000 or Windows XP but that seems to apply to most recently developed software these days. 256MB or RAM is recommended and it needs 150MB of hard disc to do a full installation. Now here’s another one that may catch some out a minimum 1024x768 screen display. To finish the requirement IE 5.1 or higher and Macromedia Flash Player 7 the latter is included in the installer. There are a number of additional requirements to do certain things like needing at least a GB of free hard disc space to create a Video CD.

This is described as software to make the most of your digital camera. I think the real novice will probably tend to use two of the four main areas. 1)Download, View and Organise. 2)Improve and Enhance. The other two items they may feel are beyond them but with the level of handholding they should not be. 3)Backup and Protect. 4)Create and Share.

On first staring it offers to find all your images already on your hard disc and to collate them, you can add notes to each image and even group them in categories such at 2004 Holiday, Trip to Paris, 2005 Grandchildren’s visit etc. It then can not only download images from your camera but also sets certain criteria automatically and even rotates images when required. It also allows you to tell it how you want to store images using keywords, folders or collections. This means you could just say Dog and all your Dog images can be instantly shown.

The Improve and Enhance Option is where a not that special image can be instantly improved. Of course ‘red eye’ is a must and lots of packages - including some that come free with printers - can do this but often you need to select eyes individually not so with Corel Photo Album 6. There are other things that even the more experienced user might think twice about changing but again they are a single click away. Something a lot of people have tried and then quickly forgotten about is Panorama here providing you have taken a range of overlapping images on more or less the same level then leave it to the software to produce that special image.

Everyone should backup images and with all PC’s having at least a CD writer this is straightforward and why not therefore go that step further and make a Video CD with Corel’s help you do not need to be an expert.

Create and Share enables all sorts of projects to be created using the wizards provided you say what images to use enter a few more details and let the software do the rest.

The package includes Photorecovery stated to cost £25, two volumes of Scrapbook Templates at £15 each and Pixmantec RawShooter essentials so £55 of extras free.

Corel Photo Album 6 is available from dealers and mail order www.amazon.co.uk have it for £26.99 including p&p, at that price it’s certainly one to have.
