Hummingbird Haven

Natural disasters can occur but you can help by repairing the damage caused.

Following excursions to repair the damage caused to location with safe refuge for turtles and colourful birds in their natural habitat, Mixo Games returns to the subject of ornithology and disaster in their Twistingo series of titles.  This time the rescue mission comes in the form of Hummingbird Haven.  This title is available in Collector's Edition format with the game can be played in a choice of Casual, Normal or Extreme difficulty modes that offer varying rates of speed, hints and type of puzzles.  You can also adjust volume levels for music and sound effects plus view the action in full screen mode.

The event that has caused the disruption to the island home of the hummingbirds and its human population has been brought about by a rare solar eclipse.  The area of Hummingbird Haven was badly damaged and the islands natural resources and beauty were being put under stress and strain.  You have been chosen to repair the damage caused by restoring six amulets that provide protection to this bird haven.  In order to carry out this task you will need to complete a variety of Hidden Object type tasks that are linked to four mini game type puzzles.

The game makes use of two different types of Hidden Object game play.  One type of the Hidden Object type format will present a cluttered scene which will, from time to time, be overlaid by an occasional label indicating the type and number of a particular item to find.  At the conclusion of this puzzle you will have managed to collect five numbered bingo balls which has a part to play in a mini game latter.

The other type of Hidden Object game play again involves a cluttered scene with your quest limited to finding pairs of items.  As part of this task you will have gathered six pearls plus a number of pottery pieces.  These pieces need to be placed together to form an object.  As with the bingo balls, the collected items will have an intrinsic part to play in the mini game puzzles that are dotted throughout the game.  These mini games are titled Bingo Blitz, Zen Mah-jong, Tile Matching and Solitaire puzzles.

Bingo Blitz involves being presented with one or two Bingo cards which you will need to complete by covering the numbers from a snaking chain of numbered balls.  Sometimes you will need to deal with more than a single chain of balls.  Zen Mah-jong follows the normal pattern of removing titles in pairs that have a free side available so that they are not completely blocked.

Tile matching operates in a similar way to Mah-jong but with one vital difference.  One of each pair must be selected from a panel located beneath the main arrangement of tiles.  Occasionally a wild tile in the form of a cat will appear.  Solitaire game play involves the creating of runs of cards that are either one lower or higher than the previous one.  Certain cards, coloured gold, will bring the reward of money to help pay for restoring the island's facilities.

Mixed in with the Hidden Object game play and mini puzzle solving requires the construction of a map from pieces to reveal the position of Hummingbird nest eggs.  Revealed nests of eggs bring the return of a magical amulet.  Linking everything together will be cut-scenes featuring overlaid video characters delivering appropriate dialogue as you restore the island to its natural state.

My review of this game is based on the Collector's Edition version.  Once the main game has been completed you gain access to a further 6 Bingo Blitz games, 9 Zen Mah-jong games, 6 Tile Matching games and 9 Solitaire hands  You can also gain access to various scenic views and play music tracks.

With its mixture of puzzle gaming styles, scenic views and restoring natural disaster elements, this title is worth considering.  I downloaded my copy of the title from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99.  The game is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £15.31.  The game requires a 1.6 GHz processor with 2048MB of RAM and 1.20GB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
