Holmes Family Action

Image of author
With its expanding family, members of the Homes family continue to solve crimes.

While this next title might indicate that its character of Ms Holmes might be returning from her adventures in the AVIGOR's Detective Agency offering.  However this is not true.  This particular Ms Holmes is o the one featured in the Elephant Games "The Dancing Men" offering.

To help reduce confusion, this Ms Holmes is Sharotte Holmes rather than AVIGOR's Sharon Holmes.  As well as the change in the main character and the product's developer, this game also adopts a complete change in the game's playing style.  Rather than t concentrate on Nonogram action, this title of the "Milverton Plot" belongs to a more Hidden Object Adventure game.

Whatever the name of the main character and style of playing, you can make the usual adjustments to the game playing environment to suit your playing style.  Volume level adjustments can be made to music, effects, environment and voice.  Further choices allow for full or wide screen viewing with a custom cursor and special effects turned on or off plus a choice of Casual, Advanced, Hardcore or Custom difficulty.

I have been looking at the Collector's Edition version of the game which bundles a number of extra items to supplement the main game.  You get a bonus chapter, wallpaper, music, screen saver, along with the chance to replay Hidden Object tasks plus solve mini game puzzles, examine Collectibles and visit a secret room to take part in an expedition.  While some bonus items will be available immediately, others will require the necessary progress to have been made in the main game before you are granted access.

As you might suppose, you are cast in the role of Sharotte Holmes who sets out to discover who is spreading the rumours that her uncle was a criminal rather than a respected investigator.  Assisting you in this task-based actions will be various tools arranged across the bottom of the screen when in adventure mode.  Running from left to right, these tools consist of a Map, Task, Inventory, Strategy Guide and Hint feature in the shape of an owl.

The Map will show various available locations with teleport features and where tasks and Collectibles can be found while the Task shows the current job.  The Inventory can be locked in position or left to disappear when not required.  Items in the Inventory accompanied by a plus sign will need some work before use.  Further assistance will be provided by a mouse cursor which will change shape when in the vicinity of possible actions.

Your investigation will take you to various locations as evidence will lead in different direction with many items being located once puzzles have been solved.  At various points during the game, overlaid windows will be used to emphasize points of interest with split screens appearing when other characters interact with you in order to impart information in the form of spoken or printed dialogue.  While the scenes depicted the various locations are well-drawn, I was somewhat disappointed to discover that most scenes lacked any animation.

As mentioned earlier, the game features a variety of mini game puzzles and Hidden Object game play.  Both forms of game play are featured 13 times in this game.  Mini game puzzles tend to focus on tasks involving sorting through evidence when looking for clues.  A Skip option will be available when tackling such tasks.  Identified by an outbreak of sparkles. Hidden Object game play will require you to find various items in a scene or replaced.  The items could be listed in text format, as silhouettes or part of the scene under inspection.  Rather than a Skip option. you will be provided with a Hint feature.

This title can be downloaded from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99.  It is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £15.86.  The game requires a 2/5 GHz with 1024MB of RAM and 868MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
