The Gen 6 smart watch from Fossil has a 44mm wide screen and is stated to run for 24 hours plus between charges. I pushed this and got just over 32 hours but it will always depend on what you do with it and if the screen is always on or not.
It comes with a USB to magnetic connection to the watch back it is stated to charge to 80% in a little over 30 minutes, in my tests it took 42 minutes and a full recharge took just under the hour. However if you push the battery really low then it enters a time only mode until it gets a decent amount of charge in its battery.
The total weight including the rubber strap is 72 grams.
Now as the world begins to try to return to normal so do those who try to remove your possessions so taking your phone out in a public area could be unhelpful so a watch that makes and receives phone calls, receives emails and even answers them with the aid of Alexa could help, this offerings can do all that and more.
That however is just the tip of what this 6th Gen offering from Fossil can do, an Echo Cardiogram, heart rate and workout are all at the touch of buttons or screen.
So apart from being a watch it’s also a calendar and with Alexa’s help can guide you to your destination and your phone stays in your pocket, so what were those who would zoom up on a motor scooters now tend to prefer electric scooters which are even quieter and they have to find another victim.
The health stuff is done by using Google Fit and all the normal things like daily steps, workouts – indoor and outdoor – sleep are all available, however unlike other offerings I only found one face that showed all these things as well as the time. There are some very distinctive faces available and while once you have found the right item in the menus I found it easier to change them when connected to my phone – in the privacy of my own home of course – this is all done by Bluetooth which also updates your health statistics as well.
Small amounts like a bus fare can be paid by NFC using Google Pay in a lot of areas.
The round screen is quite clever as you scroll through options they choices get bigger as they get towards the widest part of the screen.
The range of things available is ever increasing so while on the move Translate may be useful and I know people control Spotify music on their phone from their watch, while it is currently very relevant I am not sure if a hand washing timer utility is that useful but it’s there.
For me as an older person with fitness being less helpful than survival the built in Echo Cardiogram is useful as getting to see ones doctor gets harder and even getting a video call requires filling in pages of information online.
At the time of publication the Fossil Gen 6 Smart Watch is available from Amazon for £277.21 in a choice of four colours. It's also available from Fossil's own web site for £279.
