Paint by Pixel 2 is the follow up offering to Tiny Little Lion title that is, not surprisingly, also named Paint by Pixel. As with the similarly named Paint by Numbers concept, the Tiny Little Lion offering is built around the means to colour in pre-drawn sketches using a supplied selective palette. When applying colour to the chosen sketch, you will need to be targeting areas of linked pixels rather than numbered sections.
The usual options to create a suitable working environment for yourself are available with this product which might help you impress friends and family with your supposed artistic ability. Profiles can be created to record the efforts and work of different people. Adjustments can be made to the volume levels for background music and sound effects while a choice of resolutions are available. There is also a choice of English or the Netherland language with regards instructions.
The product comes with 95 sketches that have been graded into five separate categories. As with the original offering, these categories are based on size and contain the same number of sketches as featured previously. You can work your way through the different categories and individual sketches in any order you choose as you tackle 14 Tiny, 23 Small, 24 Medium, 20 Large and 15 Hugh sketches that are supplied with an appropriate title.
Your chosen sketch, without its title. will be transferred to a work area. Positioned to the right of the sketch will be a panel containing a pair of separate areas. Taking over most of this panel will be a list of numbered icons representing the different colours that will decorate the finished image. There is also an additional icon that will display the number of pixels currently waiting to for the current colour to be applied.
Running down the side of the palette will be a column of available tools. These tools will allow you to select from options that include fill whole areas, tackle a single pixel using a brush of different sizes, turn on a zoom view feature, fit the sketch size to that of the screen area and select which colour will be used as a background. This background colour will also be used to highlight the areas you are currently working on with the sketch.
During the actual colouring in of the pixels on a chosen sketch, you can opt to let the program make the selection of the order in which to proceed through the colours in sequence or you could cherry pick as your random choice of colours are added. Once all the necessary colours have been added, in whatever method you prefer, you can either continue to the next sketch or access an Edit facility. This particular option will open up a colour editing panel.
With this feature you can select to alter any individual colour currently used within the sketch. Slider bars become available to adjust the Hue, Saturation and Value of each colour. Changes made will be immediately visible on screen. If not satisfied, or unhappy, with the results then an option is available to revert to the original look.
While Paint by Pixel and Paint by Numbers provide similar functionality, I felt slightly more at ease with Paint by Numbers although the Edit feature was a useful addition to the Paint by Pixel product. I downloaded my copy of Paint by Pixel 2 from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $9.99. It is also available from Big Fish Games priced at £7.73. The game requires a 2.0 GHz processor with 2048MB of RAM and 211MB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
