Salter are the name in small scales this 5kilo offering allows you to place a dish or bowl on the scale and reset it to zero so that adding a certain amount of a substance does not require any maths, you can then add the next ingredient or should you wish zero again and carry on until you have all the ingredients.
The scale is 22x19.5x1cm and while most will use it in kilo mode for those who want it pounds and ounces are still available at the touch of a button as indeed are liquid measurements in fluid ounces and ml the latter measurement the box calls Aquatronic.
The scale is powered by two large watch/clock type batteries that are inserted in the bottom of the unit but are not activated until you remove a packing strip. The display on the front is 3.4x1.7cm.
The instant read thermometer is a probe with the readout area on the end this is calibrated in in .1cm increments. It is 15.5cm long so big enough to prove even a large bird like a turkey, the readout end is 4x3x1.5cm, the display is 2x1.3cm and it is powered by a watch type battery that is supplied in the box.
The range of the display is from -45 to 200degrees Celsius and -49 to 392degrees Fahrenheit, both the lowest and highest are unlikely to be achieved in the average kitchen in the carcass of anything.
The final part of the set is the timer which can not only be used in the standard countdown mode but also in count up and even has a memory function. It is 8x6x1.5cm and has a fold out stand that allows you to view the readout at an angle. The display area is 4.4x3cm; this is also powered by a single watch type battery that is supplied. There are two buttons on the top one sets minutes the other sets seconds and if you press them both together the effect is to zero the display. The third button on the side of the display starts and stops it, easy to use even when the hands are wet or sticky.
All three parts of the set have very clear and easy to read black on grey displays. As these are normally sold separately there are three different instruction sheets in multi-language formats but none should tax you too much to understand the controls of the three separate devices.
It is nice to have a matching set and is something than any cook will use frequently so not a gift likely to end up at the back of a cupboard.
The Salter Kitchen Scale Time Gift Set is available from Amazong for £40 including free delivery.
