Sol Republic Relays Sport Earbuds

These buds are ‘tuned for performance, won’t fall out’ according to the box, so while the only gentle jogging I do is when I am late for a bus or train I can do lots of violent head movement that will often make earbuds lose their seating.

The pair given to me at an Xmas In July event were turquoise blue. Unusually no buds were fitted to the unit; instead there were four different sets in a plastic bag. This can be a good idea as you are not tempted to try the buds fitted without thinking are they right for me. I decided on the second smallest and I have worn this pair without problems during all my tests.

Perhaps it’s me but unusually I found they fitted best with the control block on the right side whereas most seem to have this on the left side. This is 12cm down from the earbud, another 18cm on the cables join to become one for the rest of their 96cm journey to the L shaped connector that goes into your SmartPhone or MP3 player.

At the point where the two cables join is a crocodile clip in black that allows you to anchor the cable to a shirt or other such item of clothing.

The buds themselves are 1.5cm in length and are 1.6cm across at the back. The back of the bud is .5cm to .8cm dependant on where it is so the bud fits onto this so it enters the ear at an angle.

The way I wear them has the cable emerging from the base of the ear and as claimed they stay in place even with movements that would often remove others but they do not totally plug the ear so traffic noise can still be heard.

With the crocodile clip in place there is no great pressure on the bud or the ear.

There are two small manuals the thicker is one is Warranty Information and the thinner one a User Manual in four languages. On reading this I found that as I thought I was wearing them in the wrong ears but they were far more comfortable for me like this so I remain the rebel.

As always I test all earbuds and headphones with a set of carefully selected files from the whole gamut of Genres including things I dislike like Opera and Pop through Classical and including a good chunk of my favourite Genre Jazz.

I find that small group jazz – especially live performances often has surprises like tiny sounds you would not normally hear with speakers. Brush work from the drummers sound great and while some may want more bass I found it adequate but then my head banning days – apart from the movements required to shake these buds free – are long gone.

The manual explains what one, two or three presses of the single button on the control block will do.

The Sol Republic Relays Sport are available from Amazon for £39.99 in either black, blue or yellow.
