The TCL first next-generation 5G smartphone is the TCL 10 5G. Supplied with the product is a slip-on transparent protective cover that slots over the rear of the device.
Adopting the standard candy bar appearance, the TCL 10 5G has dimensions of 163.65 x 76.56 x 9.05 mm (W x H x D) and weighs in at 210g. With its round corners on this body, this handset features a bevel-less display that does not seem to attract finger smears in the quantity than some other units I have looked at in the past. Capable of displaying 16m colours, this capacitive touch-screen with multi-touch capability, delivers a screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. The 6.53-inch FHD+ Dotch™ display has a screen-to-body ratio of 91% and a pixel density of 395 ppi.
Running down either side of the mercury grey handset's body are various controls and options. Positioned on the right side of the body is the standard arrangement of a volume level rocker and a power button. The left side of the handset houses a button to activate the unit's Assistant feature plus a pop-out slider tray that is capable of holding either two Nano SIMs to cover personal and business communication use or a single Nano SIM and a Micro SD card that can expand storage space up to 1TB. Top and tailing this handset's body are a 3.5mm jack socket for headphone connection and a USB Type C connection for charging and accessing external sources.
Arranged along the top rear of the smartphone's body is a panel containing the main camera lenses and a pair of LED Flash units. Making up this 64MP high resolution camera are a 64MP + 8MP + 2MP + 16MP covering 118 degree wide-angle, a macro lens and a depth camera. Capable of delivering features such as fixed and auto-focus imagery, this camera set-up facilities include still and video captures at 1920 x 1080 @30fps, portrait, super night and pro options. Further options include zoom settings, HDR, timer, slo-motion, light trace, scenic choice and panorama.
Selfie fans need not worry as there is a front mounted 16MP camera. This model supports 4-in-1 big technology whereby the camera will automatically combine four pixels into one. This feature is meant to produce a brighter image especially when bad light conditions are encountered. Sharing images, either as input or output especially when the content is of the 4K high resolution type, can take advantage of 5G ultra-fast speed which can be up to 2.5x faster with 5G than 4G.
The TCL 10 5G is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset that consists of an Octa core (2 GHz, Quad core, Kyro 260+ 1.8 GHz, Quad core, Kyro 260) with graphics handled by an Adreno 620 GPU. As standard you get 6GB of RAM and 128GB of memory which can be expanded to 1TB through the use of a Micro SD card. Built into the TCL 10 5G handset is a Li-ion 4500 mAh battery that supports fast charging and on-the-go reverse charging. Running my usual timing test of playing a constant stream of videos, transferred from a flash drive I was able to get 11 hours and 25 minutes of viewing pleasure before the battery was drained.
This smartphone makes use of TCL NXTVISION visual technology and high resolution audio. The latter feature means you have the facility to connect up to 4 Bluetooth speakers or 4 Bluetooth headphones to share your favourite music with others. Other features on this handset include a fingerprint sensor on the rear of the handset, light sensor, proximity sensor, accelerometer, compass and gyroscope.
Providing the interface to connect the user with the smartphone is Android 10 with all the features you would expect from this software, along with a choice of Home screens and layouts. This software comes with a promise of at least two guaranteed major OS upgrades and the latest security updates every 60 days.
The TCL 10 5G smartphone will be available from Three Mobile for just £19 a month for the first six months. Other retailers will follow with their own offers.
