It’s Naim Time

A string quartet, now you would assume that would be classical, although Naim do a classical section they also have what they call contemporary I just call it good music.

Jim Gailloreto’s Jazz String Quartet featuring Kurt Elling Naim CD090

If you should come in with the string quartet playing you would be certain to say this is a classical album after all two violins a viola and a cello are not normal jazz or contemporary fare, however add the soprano saxophone of Jim Gailloreto and on two tracks add the voice of Kurt Elling and the string bass of Rob Amster you certainly have music that’s well worth a listen.

Five tracks are Jim Gailloreto originals however in a very interesting move Naim have made one of the more well known tracks available to download as a lower quality MP3 for you to sample before you buy, this is not just a snippet but the whole track. Anyone who knows just a bit about jazz will know John Coltrane and perhaps one of his most famous pieces Giant Steps. I give the link below, hear it for yourself just to see what a string quartet and soprano saxophone sound like.

This CD has two compositions by Wayne Shorter Witch Hunt and Infant Eyes and the other track is by Kenny Dorham Fair Weather, in total around 77minutes of music that I doubt you can call classical and maybe not even Jazz, I enjoyed it. For good measure two tracks have the voice of a much in demand singer Kurt Elling.

As with most Naim recordings it is direct to tape so no dubbing and no second chance, I maybe am not a purist but I always prefer a live performance with all it’s possible problems and this True Stereo release is almost that.

Patrick Noland  Piano Gathering Light Naim CD011

As always when I look at a new release I get the chance to sample something released a while ago – but still available – and here I chose the first CD by Patrick Noland.

This was recorded by Ken Christianson – as are a lot of Naim CD’s – live in front of a small audience in a church in Illinois on a nine foot Steinway twelve years ago.

There are eleven tracks nine of which are Patrick Noland originals. The other two are Drifting Pedals by Ralph Towner and one more will have heard of Charlie Haden – another Naim artist – Chairman Mao. This CD has over an hour of wonderful piano.

I enjoy Jazz and when possible I play CD’s around twelve hours a day and have what I consider a reasonable collection of Jazz and jazz related music. If pushed I would probably admit that the piano is my favourite instrument and these tracks by Patrick Noland are now in my collection.

Naim releases are £12.98 and they also do some samplers of both Jazz and Classical music at only £5 each. For a browse why not try the link below.
